Excel foot pump pressure gauge is wrong

Hi all,

I’ve spent the last year thinking that my Sevylor electric pump under inflates my Excel volante 330, because the gauge on the foot pump that came with the boat always said it was under by 1-2 psi when I checked immediately before launching.

BUT… I now have a separate bravo pressure gauge which matches the Sevylor’s readout exactly!

So I think I’ve been over-inflating my SIB for the last year by a couple of PSI… not great.

Just sharing in case anyone else is in the same… boat…

I've said in the past which gauge do we trust... given they are all budget made and few folks would have a certified gauge to correct the budget gauge reading.

I tend to think if two are about the same they are likely to be right and if three in the same ball park then that adds to the trust.

I have Zodiac, Bravo and the Bravo 12V pump gauges which are near enough the same... but I have in the past had a Zodiac gauge (old) that was way out.

Fortunately you don't mention any apparent damage.

I have always trusted the accuracy of the small 12v Sevylor pump over the hand pump that came with the SIB. Terry replaced the gauge on the hand pump twice as the first two never showed a pressure above 3psi.
I have a Sevylor manometer which I had checked against a calibrated gauge a few years ago, I use that every now and then just to check the 12v pump.

Between inflatable boats and kitesurfing I've learned that none of the pump gauges are ever correct. You can get a little Halkey-Roberts gauge for $20. Definitely worth it imo
