Dear all,
Thanks again for all of this advice. It's actually altered my thinking a bit. I'm going to look out for a second hand SIB-Engine combo that is near ready to go. As many of you say, this is more budget friendly and can be upgraded in a couple of years having not broken the bank. Hopefully, come next, spring/summer, i'll be out catching a few fish and enjoying it!
Cheers,
Steve

Selva have close links to yamaha I suspect it might not be long before we see those engines with yamaha hoods on them.
With the yamaha price premium of course[emoji6]

We compared the Selva & Yamaha range side by side at the boat show; Identical under the hood. The Selva components were all Yamaha branded. The prices were very similar too.

I guess the only surprise there is that the Yamaha wasn't dearer. I'm sure when selva and yam were selling identical larger engines the selva was cheaper. Not sure if any other selva engines are yams nowadays.

Good choice. Let us know what you end up with.. or ask for advice on any purchase possibilities you're not sure about.

Yamaha 8hp and 9.9hp both 40kg ish....so perhaps the selva single cylinders aren’t as Yamaha as the others?

Im sure pikey dave would notice the difference between a single and a twin
Unless he was talking in general and not specifically about those two lightweight selvas

No doubt he will be along to clarify. TBH with them being so light you would expect yamaha to be making a song and dance about them as they are a vast improvement in weight terms for a 4 stroke. Seems odd they were on display at a boat show but the web site hasn't been updated.

Tbh I can’t remember the specifics of each engine as we were only looking at the 20hp class. The Selva 20 hp weighed in at just shy of a hernia inducing 52kg, for a short shaft manual start tiller steer. The Yamaha was exactly the same engine with different livery. When we compared the other engines on the stand(s) it was a similar story. There maybe the odd variant that is different. Iirc, there was a couple of hundred quid difference between the Selva & Yamaha equivalent @ 20hp. Both of which were dearer than the Suzuki.

That makes sense of why they dont show on the Yamaha web site.
I'd imagine if they prove reliable it wont be long before the lightweight selvas turn up with yamaha overcoats on.

Many, many years ago Selvas were being marketed by a company called "Ladyline" (Honest...had a shop in Glasgow city centre near the Argyle Arcade) and they were playing a hard game with the larger engines.
The looked like good value until you discovered the number in the model name was arbitrary eg an SELVA 80 was a 60hp engine.

Short long story, invest wise if plan buying a new rib, a larger FB Rib say a 330 planes faster than a a 2.75 one with a less HP motor, will have more deck room along fun with the larger one. A Tohatsu 9.8 HP is an excellent match if a used 2 strokes is possible to find in good working condition.
To get the max out of that boat/motor combo will need to install a less prop pitch than factory delivered to plane faster 2-3 mates. For me to fully plane a small combo is all, fast displacement speed is real boring along time consuming.
Happy Boating
