found a boat.

ok, I live in the east of England, I have barely ever been on a boat. yet im 5 minutes away from the Norfolk broads... its just one of them things....

a guy who was renting a unit off of me done a runner a couple of years back, I finally got around to clearing it and found a boat... I inflated it and it has a couple of leaks but looks otherwise in good shape...

I want to take it on the river with my mates but I don't know what I need to do?

does it need a license?
an MOT??
insurance?

is this going from a drunk afternoon in the pub great idea to
you need another mortgage?

any help would be appreciated!

You managed to get your self an expensive piece of kit there, its a Zodiac Yachtline, maybe a YL275, but it could be the bigger YL310. Cost would have been North of £1k new.

The plate on the engine tells you the actual model and also the min and max engine you can use.

On the sea round the UK you dont need anything, but its a really good idea to get at least some basic safety kit and training. Likewise, 3rd party insurance is cheap and worth getting just for piece of mind (and in case you ram someones £1 million pride and joy ).

If you want to take it on the broads, you need a licence available either on a day, week or annual basis.

unfortunately there is no engine with it ( I looked hard!)

but its a bargain either way.
ive been googling (which is never a good idea) im reading about a BSS certificate?? is that applicable?

Not applicable if you're going to row it, which I suggest would probably be the best place to start.

Even if you get an engine you can still buy a day or week licence without the BSS cert, you just state the boat is safe on the applicationj form. (which it is because its not got any internal petrol/gas/toilet).

No-one ha mentioned the Rib.net favourites...

You don't need them but you'd be highly recommended to have some form of life jacket / buoyancy aid coz there is a good chance the first time you go out someone is going for a swim!

Secondly some means of getting help if something bad happens. In the river that could probably be a mobile phone in a water proof bag. if you are going out to sea phone coverage is crap so a handheld VHF would be a very wise investment.

Now before you get over excited about covering your unpaid rent... theta may cost £1lk new. Thats not a new boat and not in perfect condition... With the holes patched for a 3m tender at the bottom end of the spec you'd be looking at £3-400 so I'm not sure you could expect any more than that for an old top end of spec but someone may correct me...
...In its current state it would probably go for £100 - £150 on flea bay.

You say it leaks? How bad? Have you filled it to correct pressure and left it 24 hours?

shiney, thanks for the concern of price, i have no intention of selling it! just nice to know ive got something back from it. (i got a 10 tonne trolley jack a car and a Snap on battery charger too so im well happy!)

as for the safety tip- it is appreciated!

the holes are bad enough for it to go down in 10 mins, so im gunna need a big puncture repair kit. im gunna take it on my mill pool and have a go with it first, with a rope attached to land just incase.

my mate nearly wet himself when I sent him the picture, we're going to have loads of fun with this!

he left all his family photo albums... I couldn't throw that stuff though, just incase one day he came back... everything else is replaceable, but family photos aren't.. now i have someone elses family photos in my loft! haha #creepy

There are two fabrics used to make inflatables. PVC based or Hypalon based. Hypalon is posher. Even though the Yachtline is posh its not that posh!... ...from what I can see its a PVC.

Although someone with experience patching PVC may be able to offer a cheaper temporary fix to let you get out and see if its what you wanna mess about with...
