Found a SIB - just need a 9.9hp 2-stroke outboard...
Hello,
I have had a look through the archives and have not found any posts on this particular topic but apologies if I have missed them.
I am new to this game but I have been given a Wetline 2.9m SIB with an inflatable keel section. My intended use for the boat is fun/speed probably on flat water rather than big seas. The transom is rated to 10hp and after reading various posts I have got it into my head that I really need a 9.9hp 2-stroke outboard due to the lower weight, better acceleration etc. The only slight issue is that I can not find any 9.9hp 2-stroke outboards for sale on the internet - or at least not one that looks like it has much life left!
I have read that legislation was introduced a couple of years ago which stopped the manufacture of new 2-stroke outboards but I would have thought there would still be a 2nd hand market in used 2-strokes of this size.
I have tried all the local used outboard sellers, appollo duck, boatshop24, boatsand outboards even autotrader and ebay. Am I looking in the wrong places?
A friend at work is going to Spain in a couple of weeks and tells me that there are always plenty of used outboards for sale over there but are there import restrictions under the legislation that stopped the manufacture of new 2-strokes?
I would really like to get an engine in time for summer so any advice would be much appreciated.
Cheers

You can still bring in a 2nd hand 2 stroke I think.

There are still plenty of decent ones out there. You can still buy brand new from some dealers who have some left. Those are the places I'd be looking as well, boatsandoutboards and ebay being my favourite.

9,9 or 15
Hi, I don't know about tohatsu or other non American outboards but here in USA the 9.9 and 15 HP Johnson or evinrude have same cc, same weight and the price for an used one is almost the same. In my opinion I would go for a 15 HP.

I agree - beat me to it - in fact Tohatsus 18hp is also the same weight. I know his transom is only rated to 10hp but that's probably for a heavier 4 stroke.
There is a 9.8 which is much lighter though I think.

9.9
Given an inflatable? Pretty lucky, I'd say. Well done.
I've got an Evinrude 9.9. It's the one with the white finish, so I'd think it's about 20 years old.
Last season, my son used it on an Avon 311 rib and it flew. Since then he's bought a 15 and so the Evinrude is surplus.
Having read your posting, I went out to start it but it sulked. I'm going to get new plugs and petrol, and if it goes, I'll let you know if you like. If it runs I'd like £150 for it, but you are North West and I'm East!
Regards,
Ray.

Yup, that's why you can't easily find a 2nd hand one. People either keep them or as soon as they are for sale they get sold.
I purchased a 2s rather than a 4s because the 2s was about 30% lighter.

Just been through the same thing. That 9.9 Tohatsu is a 4-stroke. Which weighs the same as a 15hp 2-stroke - 36kg.
9hp 2-stokes are popular because you can use them on SIBs and as auxillaries. Finding a 2-stroke 15hp will be easier.
Or hold out for a 9.8 tohatsu as they are excellent. You find a bad review of these.
