Fowey
I'm off to Fowey at the end of next week. Is there anything in particular I should look out for, reefs, hazards etc if I go west to Mevagissey or east. towards Looe?
Suggestions for stop offs, pubs, places to eat, sites to see would be most helpful.

Hi
Watch the tides, Looe and Polperro are tidal, 2 hours or so either side is your lot.
Mevagissey is ok in the outer harbour but you do end up on a ladder ost fo the time, not a set of steps - I usually ring them first as if its quiet, you can get teh outer steps.
Plymouth - an easy run (18nm), either via the lighthouse, (26) round the coast or straight accross, lots of options there - I prefer the Mayflower marina for food, followed by the yacht haven.
Falmouth is a good trip too - down to Pandora inn - depends how far you want to go (20nm) if you're in the sib?
Going up river on a rising tide is fun, you should be able to get up to the ship with good timing and Boddinick has a good tea room.
Fowey has plenty of eats and drinks - as do some of the outlying villages.
Have a good week

The river is quite short and make sure it is a rising tide

So the weather is looking good, the kids have gone back to school, everything is favorable for a great 10 days in Fowey - then!!!! Truck fails it's mot on Saturday (I knew I should have changed it this year!) and tonight Isla (dog) has definitely torn a cruciate chasing pheasants. Find a welder and a visit to the vets first thing in the morning!

Annoying to have pre-holiday vehicle and dog stress.
Really looking forward to hearing how you like Fowey. I forget if anyone has mentioned harbour dues (includes launch) at £45 a week, if you decide to pay them no trouble to pop to the Harbourmasters office on Albert Quay which has a pontoon. I found them really helpful with any queries you have.
Have you downloaded the harbour guide yet? At the end gives an idea of how far up river you can go and the tide height needed.
https://foweyharbour.co.uk/wp-conten...Guide23web.pdf
Don't forget to visit the Quay Cafe at Penmarlam. If the two old guys are still running it you are in for a shock or treat depending on your style of humour. It's a really nice spot and quite peaceful after the pressure of people on the Fowey side.
Polkerris to the west is very nice. Not a lot of water close in to Gribbin Head on the way round there, watch the OB skeg on Cannis Rock.

Thanks for the download guide David, very useful. I had forgotten about the Quay Cafe, but it's now on my to do list.
I'm not to concerned about the truck, holes just to the rear of the spring hangers, weld a couple of plates on and it'll be fine. A few other odds and sods which I wasn't expecting, but it is 10 years old, so it's to be expected.
More concerning is Isla, she's definitely torn a ligament which puts paid to any coastal walks we had planned, and she is looking very sorry for herself. Hopefully the weather allows for more boating and relaxation as I doubt we'll be walking far. I wouldn't mind but she didn't even catch the pheasant!

Our little dog did both cruciates. First one cost £2500 to get sorted we rested her for the second one which took awhile but it worked. Poppy is a small dog however

Torn Acl, anti inflammatory injection, 10 day course if anti inflammatory suspension, lots of rest, no long walks and £140 lighter.
I suppose it could have been much worse.

Poor Isla....and poorer you, but I suppose as vet bills go it isn't too bad. Hope the Jeep bill is as reasonable!
Start preying to the weather gods now it holds out for you Steve.
Heat wave up here this week and of course no time off!
Was going out Sunday as hot...but gusts of 30+ and no shelter put us off. Maybe this weekend if the wind stays down a bit.

Hi Brian, I don't know what's in the injection, but I want some! She's walking around as though nothing is wrong with her. I've had to tether her as she keeps chasing the squirrels around the garden! She could just about walk yesterday.
Weather is looking decent, probably some of the best it's been all summer.
As for the Navara? I'm expecting it to be close to £1k by the time it's all done, thank goodness for credit cards.

The HM at Fowey says that they’re trying to encourage more ships like this to visit the harbour. Just when Venice & Dubrovnik are trying to discourage them, after realising that they’re actually bad for business.

I must say I really enjoyed watching the large commercial ships making their way right through Fowey. Not so keen on the idea of cruise ship folks ashore ticking their visit checklists off.

I think cruise ship are fine in the right place, however I don't think Fowey is one of them, it's just to small. I think even St Austell would be pushing it a bit.
I recall a good few years ago, we was sailing along the Italian riviera and anchored off Portofino. It was beautiful, stunning scenery, lovely and warm, peaceful, fantastic evening meal on deck and a few drinks late into the night before before bed.
What a horror the next morning when we awoke about 7.00am to be greeted by a huge floating Orange monstrosity called "Easycruise". To make things even worse, whilst we had breakfast this monstrosity started to spew out little orange monsters full of people. Needless to say we sailed on and explored the coast before returning to Portofino the next day when the hoards had gone.
I think it was shortly after that occasion that the authorities band cruise ships from Portofino and the bay.

The concept of 'Banning' is appealing to many people provided it is not them that is banned

We were in Portofino earlier this year & the cruise ships are back. They had even cordoned off a portion of the harbour to act as a temporary terminal for the shuttle boats.
Still managed to find the best ice cream we’ve ever had though[emoji39]
