I've been all over Scotland on holiday, camping with the Scouts, car rallies, but the worst I've ever seen seen for them orrible little buggers was the caravan club site at Kielder Water, it was a nightmare as soon as evening fell they just swarmed, still gives me the creeps just thinking about it
I think Jambo just takes them in as pups n sell them onto Kielder

Jambo - I agree over the last 5-10 yrs they have been not too bad at all. However its probably best not to shout about it or everyone will start coming to the West Coast and the tranquility will be destroyed.

Agreed Chris, Keilder is another horror spot for them. My original post wasn't intended as a criticism more of a question!
I love Scotland but at times have had to admit defeat when the biting hoard arrive. Early mornings and late evenings this year have been quite bad at home this year and my usual repellent of Classic/Hamlet cigars hasn't had the desired effect....

I've always assumed that if any midges arrive then that's the time to head to the pub, always look on the bright side, it won't ever stop me going up Nth just taken extra beer tokens

We are on Arran where some evenings you could lean on them. Avon skin-so-soft is the answer...works a treat...with the added bonus of lovely soft skin! But I still tell the wife that a large Cuban is also essential.

They have the pluses, but we try hard not to make it to obvious that its an anti tourism strategy.

Tch!
Fizz = physiognomy noun (plural physiognomies)
a person’s facial features or expression,
Loose ends = The bits unsecured below cuffs and kilts

Yes, we are!
I have to say in the past we had a fair few midges in the Highlands, but we just got on with it.
In 2011 we spent a week at Loch Linnhe and there were hardly any there.
My wife has been using the Avon product mentioned previously, I will report on how we are getting on with the boat etc when we are there.
(I am told the accommodation has internet/wifi access)
It looks like there are plenty of places to explore, both on the boat and on foot/on bikes, and the scenery looks pretty impressive as well.

There is plenty to do if your active both on and of the water, its up to you. Remember and go and see the beavers. I am heading up on Thursday for a few days I'll look out for you on the water what is your 'driving' sib wise. I may not be out on the water as I have OB problems but if you se a yellow and black Ribcraft with a 150 mariner on the back give me a wave if you have VHF call sign Breawatch. I'll keep watch on here for you.
Have a nice week.
Cheers
B

We just have a little 2.85m SIB with a 9.8hp engine, hence my reluctance to venture out of the Loch into open water.
However we do have life jackets, flares, a sea anchor, oars and VHF on board so are not completely unprepared.
I don't have a licence for the VHF radio, I only bought it to call for help in an emergency, as last year we were in Fowey Cornwall and there was a chance we could end up in open water.
So I guess that means I shouldn't really use it to talk to other boaters?
But I will keep a look out for you. Our boat is grey with blue ends to the tubes. Here's the only picture I have of it, taken on Loch Linnhe with the smaller 6hp engine I had then.
