👋 hello… first outing.. newbie

Good Morning all,

After 6 months of winter and looking at various second hand SIBs I finally found a setup that fitted my EXTREMELY limited budget.

Picked up a Honwave T-30-AE, that came with a broken Honda 2.3 outboard, for £500. Opened up the engine to realise the stop had been removed and the pull cord was in bits. Rather than repair, I started out a hunt for a new engine.

Found a 1975 9.9 evinrude on gumtree for £100. The guy was selling for a neighbour (OAP) who had got the engine from his deceased mate. Previously was in RNLI or something so well maintained, but had no fuel tank to test. £100 was going to the RNLI anyway so took the punt. Wish I had more history on the engine tbh if anyone knows who it might have belonged to. Got in in Angus just by Dundee.

Got the necessary bits (connector, tank, etc) and some oil from westway lubricants. Vevor 500lbs wheels Amazon £80. All in £150

Fired her up in a wheelie bin, and all appears to be working well. So bought some life jackets and took her up to Loch Chon on Saturday. On the water at last!

Realised the throttle stop in forward gear is still not letting me open her up, so will need adjusted, but managed 5-6mph pottering about the loch for a few hours with my lady.
Sold the old Honda engine on Sunday fo r £80, bringing my total spend to £690.

Anyway, I’m totally new to all of this, so thanks for all the info here. Sure I’ll have more questions in future. Thought I’d stop by and say Hi, and tell anyone that it can be done on a shoestring budget. Just gotta keep your eyes peeled for bargains. Best purchase ever.

I was in the advanced editor, but the links I tried with the {img button don’t appear in preview or post.

The attachments seem to be limited to 1200x1200 for both jpg and png and 300kb.

I’ll have a play when I get home. Limited to iPhone iPad just now. And all just coming up invalid file even after compressing to less than 300k and converting to jpg. Size must be the limiting factor, or my brain.

When I’m using our Mac weirdly the site refuses to take a .jpg and I found changing to a .png (I think) sorted it.

Welcome Alex, we love bargain boating here.

Simplest way I’ve always found on any forum is just to go to imgbb.com upload the pics, copy and paste the links. Usually BB code. Simple.

They are not the best engine, but that 9.9 looks tidy enough for £100 and should be able to pop you onto the plane and get 15knts +

If I had to guess, it might not be a physical restriction on the throttle. More likely a carb setup problem. If its been sat around for a while it might need the jets cleaning. See if you can get a carb refurb kit, or maybe even a new carb. It could also be worth cha going the plugs in case they have started breaking down at higher revs.

Although it's old, I don't think much changed on these engines for about 30 yrs, so it should be possible to get spares, although they will be pattern parts.

Well as long as it will reach revs when sorted that outboard is a total bargain despite its age.

This is a great site for maintenance tips on those motors...

https://www.leeroysramblings.com/Johnson%209.9_15.htm

A fair bit down the page he mentions not running to speed...

Motor Not Revving Up Like it Used To : If all other normal things have been checked out and the motor will not run at the faster speed, sometimes if it has sat for some time with the fuel not run out of the carburetor when it was put away, the main jet can get partially plugged. The bowl of the carburetor can also accumulate some debris. If this happens, the motor may start and run at a medium speed, but is not getting enough fuel to allow it to consistently run at a faster speed.

The other thing is as mentioned previously that for the pre 87s, the twist throttle gears may be out of mesh.

Also if the timing plate linkage may have become disconnected from the upper throttle linkage peg, the motor will not run right. This peg has a plastic bushing and wavy washer with a small cotter pin holding it all together.

Leroy’s Ramblings has been an amazing resource. The throttle was stopping on the starter rope coil. Tightened that down and can now at least see the carb running to full open. Think a clean out will do it no harm at all.

Went out on Loch Lomond, with two other fatties and a dog. Left from Duncan Mills memorial slipway, and went up to the southern bay of inchcailloch. Quick walk on the island then back down to the slipway. Around 12nm all in. Kept my launch wheels down, and glad I did as they saved my prop approaching the island some really shallow rocks, need to learn about the charts and stuff too.. Got up to a decent enough speed considering, but know there’s more for her to give.

Freezing on the way back, and a fair bit of spray, so now reading up on bow canopy construction and decent waterproof clothing. Can only get better with the weather improving. Lots of lessons learned.

Thanks for the reply’s, much appreciated.

Launch wheels down, Did you manage to get on the plane? I have dropped my down close to the shore but never travelled any distance, reckon I would lose a wheel. Nice pictures and love the budget approach, what it's all about for me
