Hens Teeth

After deciding that I would not buy the 8 hp as it might not plane my 3.2 m sib. I am searching for a 9.9 SS 2 stroke outboard. These are indeed as rare a hens teeth or rocking horse shit.

If anyone has one for sale I would be interested if not a mental price

Thanks

Dennis

I can't remember if you've said... is your SIB rated to just 10HP... or perhaps 15HP?

If it is rated to 15 then of course with the old 2-strokes the 15 weighs the same as a 9.9 so you can expand your search to include 15s.

Regardless don't buy a 9.9.

Get a Tohatsu 9.8 or as Fenny says go up to a 15.

Thanks for this. Yes my boat is rated to 15hp.

These are still big beasts and I was wondering how all you sibbers carry such an engine. Weight must be around 35 kg am I correct

Yes the 9.9 and 15 2-stroke models from most makers are around 35-37kg.

The answer is unless you are a weightlifter minimise the distance you carry it and use transom wheels on the SIB so once you have the OB on it's just a big wheelbarrow.

If that 15 hp Merc is still around at under £1k in the classifieds - grab it - best SIB engine about and a true bargain price.

Our 15 is 34kg I think. But as a long shaft it's a bit of a handful to carry. Going to use my carpentry skills and make some sort of trolley wheel arrangement that clamps onto the cavitation plate.

Here she is

Well here is the Hens tooth I managed to track down. I had to drive a 600 mile round trip (Suffolk to Devon) and stay a night in Devon to collect it. I treat the trip as a bit of an adventure so don't include that in the cost.

The engine weighs in at 26kg is a short shaft and the custom trolley really helps. I got all you see in the pics for quite a good price in my view and the engine is immaculate under the hood.

I have been looking for something like this for months so when I saw it I had to move fast.

Going to test it on my 3.2 m sib tomorrow. Lets hope it performs

Dennis

Well done Dennis. When we owned ours for 3.0-3.4m SIBs it was a great motor. I would very much like to be carrying something that light!

Yes thanks... first 3 days weather have been excellent and it was good to finally get set up and on the water yesterday. Have to admit the traffic and parking difficulty takes some getting used to... we live in a quiet area and for decades have taken holidays in quieter areas of Scotland. I have already had hassle from an aggressive guy with a 17 plate Range Rover who shot from his lunch table to the parking area to claim I'd parked too close to his beloved wagon.

I always laugh at people who buy cars that are so posh and expensive that they are sort of scared to use them. With my activities I prefer older cars that you don't need to worry about too much
