Cheers Jeff
I wonder if with an outboard the hpi thing is less of an issue. Unlike a car the outboard wouldn't be registered if it was sold on privately ? So they'd never find you?

To be honest duggie not an expert but it's under warranty so registered for that I suppose if they can't trace you so forget the warranty and DIY service who could/would spend time tracing you they still have the sellers details OMO

Yeah I don't know myself Jeff, just with a car the details are recorded so they'd likely catch up with you somehow. But an outboard would just disappear into the abyss
Yeah I wouldn't be fussed keeping up a warranty I'd just self service and chance it

Yup. Of course he might have simply nicked it. In a way if he has financed it and is selling it on without clearing the finance, he has. You could cut out the middle man and just go nick one yourself! More choice and cheaper that way and as you say - who'd be able to trace it?

Tempting willk but it wouldn't be very Christian of me!
He did send me the invoice with his name on it - but get the feeling it's not going to happen anyway.
A bit relieved - I don't really need one. But then it would be nice and seemed a great price.

Personally & this is purely my opinion, I wouldn't buy a "nearly new" carbed engine when there are efi models out there. When I got back into boating, faffing about trying to get temperamental outboards to start was one of my biggest fears. Fuel injection was a revelation to me.

Yeah it wouldn't be my 1st choice either Dave, but it just seemed a good price

Just spotted the seller has put it on ebay as I've got an alert set up. So much for the family emergency!
Fair enough though, likely get a better price for it.
My tohatsu 2 stroke will keep me going anyway.

I had a Honda 20 on a 3.85m boat, it pushed our family 2 adults 3kids aged 10-12-14 at 35kmh, used bugger all in the way of fuel and had power trim and electric start. Some don't have power trim and electric so are cheaper, I never had a single issue and would happily buy another. I did mess around with props, ended up with a smaller pitch as I often carried dive gear too.

I did have water in my fuel once in a remote area in the Northern Territory, the engine limped back 20km down a crocodile infested river. Once back at our campsite I very easely drained the carby ( thankfully not an efi or I would of been in trouble ) and had it running like new again to confidently hit the same river the next day. I'm not a mechanical person, so me fixing it shows how easy it was, also this was not a fault of the engine but a fault of buying fuel in remote parts of Australia.

Duggie, it’s a good dodge if the finance isn’t cleared. Yes if it’s a one off the finance co might not bother tracing it. I wonder how joined up the insurers are when they ask for your S/N and similarly I’d say Honda Finance might have a way to alert all Honda Dealers? If it’s not a one off - someone might be more thorough.

If you are buying an engine that was bought on Finance I’d want to see the original finance agreement and proof from that company (possibly by you calling them) that it has been settled. It certainly doesn’t make sense that you’d want to sell a financed engine to get cash quick because anything you can get for it - would go straight to settling the finance.
