Honda bf20
Hi all I was just wondering if anyone has the above engine and if they have anything positive/negative about it ? Can't find much info on line.
I've been offered a month old one for £1500 which seems a bargain as they are about £2400 new.
I had previously ruled Hondas out because I thought they were 52k but they seem to have a new model which is 46k, which I can just about manage.
They aren't fuel injected unlike the new 20hp models from other manufacturers
Thanks

I know that's what I thought poly.
He said he bought it on a bit of a whim and now needs the money
It's under warranty and has had the 1st service carried out

Cheers jeff, I've been offered a shot with it as it's on the water
Still haven't been able to find much about these engines on line but it's a Honda I'm sure they are good

If you believe the guy's claims/circumstances then it's a massive bargain.
But I would be very interested to see the stated weight on the OB data plate as I too thought they were at least 50kg.
Otherwise Honda OBs have a great reputation. As an example a Tohatsu dealer who was very helpful re my recent change but said he didn't want to take the Suzuki in said had it been a Honda he'd have traded as he did OB contact hire to commercial outfits and favoured Honda for that use.
Also the Hondas usually cost more than other makes, when I bought my Suzuki the Honda 20 was almost £200 more.
Yep if you think he and the OB are genuine and the weight checks out I'd go for it.

Not 100% convinced to be honest fenlander but he's got the invoice dated June 2018 and the service book with the 1st stamp. And if I can see it running then that's good. He said he bought it on finance.
Yeah the online spec says 46kg and boasts 'the lightest in it's class', which it's not.

Oh yes... just remembered. Going back a bit they had an issue with timing belt pulleys breaking up and causing damage/breakdowns. Doing a quick Google I can't see any reference newer than 2013... but if I was buying one I'd check out with Honda UK or a dealer to see if they modded the pulleys??
Edit. I've found another grumble of this happening on a 2015 forum post somewhere... and here it's discussed a few years back...

Jeff yep that's right I've just looked. I think when I was considering a 20 I must have mistakenly taken a reference weight from a longshaft or elec start etc. So the extra weight I believed it had over the Suzuki was a factor and price another plus back then the timing pulley failure was in my mind... probably a million to one on it failing on any one OB... but at sea??

Fenlander like you I was sure the Honda short shaft manual 20's were heavier - 52kg I had in my head. I wondered if they've been modified a bit for a weight reduction. If so I hope they sorted the pulleys!

I did read the pulley issue but didn't someone say a metal one could be made quiet easy, personally never owned a Honda but there's too many around to be crap, these are carb engines too that might appeal to some.i just think it's too good to miss just be carful of the finance bit you don't want that rearing up on you.

Yeah what's the situation with that - if you buy something that's still financed are you het for it?
I guess I can just ask for confirmation it's been paid off before I buy it.

Well his phone number comes up clear and not a serial seller of boat gear.
You will have to judge on the man and circumstance when you meet him.
Re the timing pulley the best advice I've seen it to check every time you check the oil... apparently before pulley failure the belts start to run off their normal line so if you establish normal you'll see if it's happening.

It's financed or it isn't. If it is, it doesn't belong to him - be very careful!

I only know about finance from cars and my young days when it was out of order to sell them.
No idea if any current financing on a small boat would have rights to the boat?
