Honwave 26 Large rip Repair

Hi, I have a Honwave 26 inflatable that has a 4" split close to the rubber strip that runs along the middle of the sponsons. What adhesive is best to use and as I will have to put an internal patch inside the tear first, how do I do this to make sure that I can place that patch in the right place prior to offering it up to the tear. I fear that as soon as I slide it through the opening, it will likely stick to the glue before I can get it properly located. Many thanks. Terry

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Good advice here and they supply the correct two-part glue....

Thanks for that.

It looks really good but the postage cost to Scotland is nearly £15 for a 250ml tin! I get IBS PVC adhesive locally without postage. Is that a good alternative product? Many thanks. Terry

As long as it’s a two part adhesive for pvc then it will be fine.

It will need an internal patch and an external patch, possibly removing part of the rub rail to be a solid repair. You can roll up the inner patch into parchment paper, insert and set it in place. My preference for tooling is a rounded edge blade, like a dull scraper that won't bend.

Would PVC adhesive be ok to reattach rub rail? Only I see some post saying you have to prime the rubber with hypalon adhesive first? Thanks, Terry

You can’t assume the bump strip is rubber. Much more likely it’s pvc with a rubber feel.

For a 4 inch split you'll definitely need an internal patch too.

Don't worry too much about it sticking while you're trying to get it in. It requires a bit of pressure to get a proper grip. Just fold it in half length-ways and apply one edge at a time and don't apply any pressure until the end when you're happy with the position. The size of the hole will actually help you out with access in this case.

Out of interest. When I fit the internal patch, should I let it cure then inflate the tube before sticking the external patch and rubbing strip? Thanks, Terry

I would do the inner and immediately afterwards do the outer patch. There shouldn't be any need to inflate it.

If the mix ratio is good then the glue will remain workable in the pot for quite a while. Cover it with cling film while waiting so that it slows the curing and you'll be able to do the whole job in a single mix.
