That looks so rong, the hitch is under so much strain with the outboard hanging of the back! Evan if you are in the weight limit of the hitch and basket you have extended it out giving that outboard more leverage as you bounce down the road.
Nice idea but how long have you been using it like that?

My 4Runner is rated for 5000 pounds. outboard, boat and gas can weigh in at 200 pounds. It is no more stress than when I tow my 4000 pound wakeboard boat. It barely squats the suspension. It's solid.

Surely it's totally different?! Towing a boat/trailer/caravan etc is irrelevant as the weight is on the supporting wheels of the trailer - tow ball nose weight is minimal. My Landy will tow 5 tonnes easily too but that doesn't mean I would put a colossal weight all right out back hanging off the ball and what looks like a piece of bent 2" x 2" steel tubing??
50kg yes but not what you've done there why not just get a basic box trailer?

Isn't that lateral pull (i.e. towing) rather than downward or torqued/twisting/levering pull which the rack will create?
My ball-hitch / bike rack is rated for 100kg downward pressure...

I was under the impression most EU cars were 75KG on the roof. Certianly everything I have ever owned was rated to that. (but don't forget to subtract the weight of the roof bars!)

I am talking "out of territory" here, so may have this totally wrong - but the towing weight & the hitchweight are two very different numbers. Most EU cars will be somewhere between 50- 75Kg hitch weight, even if it's rated for towing a 1.8 Ton trailer.
You guys in the US make a large family saloon in the UK look like a Go Kart compared to your trucks & SUVs so apologies if I have the wrong end of the proverbial stick here. It's just that a 2.2ton hitch weight does seem an awful lot, even for a chunky SUV. ..... Sounds more like the max trailer weight? (especially when compared to the average Landrover over here)

To me it's all about the leverage you are putting on that bar coming out of the female hitch on the truck! End of the day give me a long lever and I could bend that hitch with out any problem!

Nick you would lift the front wheels off the ground before you bent my hitch reciever. I would bet you a 1000 bucks and provide a pole for you to try if you lived close to me. Lol

My hilux fitted with a Toyota bar is stamped 120kg max load on the bar
Landcruiser is 150kg max nose weight so no chance you could carry that on a UK vehicle
Even the motocross bike carriers are max 75kg
it's all about the vehicle dynamics.
we used to run 24 hour recovery business and had a new transit spectacle lift built which went for its first load test lifted a dead weight of 1 tonne off the ground at the rear the tester went to the front and easily lifted the front wheels off the ground we had to add weight to the front axle to get a test cert for the truck
Obviously your car isn't going to get a safety check after adding a bar carrier so you could turn your car into an accident waiting to happen.

I'm no so concerned with the hitch receiver it's the carrier attached to it, I think is your week point.

IMHO the weak point is the welded joint at the bottom of the outboard bracket, at the very least it needs a gusset or a couple of triangles welding in the outsides. All imho of course.

Square tube is 1/4 inch wall tubing. My weld would hold 3 outboards no problem. Id bet 10000 on that. Lol

That outboard bracket needs beefing up imo there will be to much bounce on it and I've seen welds tear out you could even bring some section back over the top and down to the front again.
Be interesting to see some film when driving from behind

What is this Debbie Downer day on Rib.net today. The thread simply asked how I transport my Rig and that is what I posted. If I would have known I was going to have to post load calcultions certified by a structual engineer I may not have posted. If you are that worried about it then the next time you see a dude from Texas driving down the road with a dinghy and an outboard motor hanging off the back of his hitch try not to follow that closely. Anyway I would love to chat some more but its 85F in Houston today and I just got off work early so Its time to hit the water. Happy Boating and Adios Amigos!

Its usually known as constructive feedback, from people concerned for the safety of other motorists, and trying to stop a lot of damage to your outboard!
Personally I think your rack will probably survive assuming you are driving sensibly and the roads are in reasonable condition; and your welding skills are good enough. I think its much more likely the engine works loose and just falls off.

No but it's got to be over 100kg with the rack, & the vid states rated to 500lbs the point I was making (maybe not very clearly) was if two fairly hefty 4x4s are only just over the capacity then the average UK family saloon isn't going to cope well with that type of setup.
As someone else pointed out us cars tend to be a lot bigger than UK cars
