It's not compulsory but yes you do, not really for theft so much but if you run into someone and chop their legs off you are in a fair bit of financial trouble potentially.

Many of us use http://www.craftinsure.com/ - about £50 - £60 for a typical SIB outfit a year.

I believe all inland waterways, e.g. canals, rivers and lakes require insurance, certainly the popular ones do.

Just think why people have car insurance its a no brainer and pretty cheap compared to car insurance. Definately worth it.

Not sure that is a great analogy... I'd guess most people have insurance because the law requires it, and then because they are worried about damage to their own car, compensating third parties is probably low down people's priorities.
