Just noticed this on gumtree , Yam 20hp 2stroke

Hi all I've just noticed this quite local to me on gumtree and I thought I'd post it on here as it would be ideal for lots of sibs it's nothing to do with me and as allways with gumtree be very careful and check that it's not a scam!

My experience with gumtree has been mixed... I got a bargain of a SIB, used once with a trailer etc for £450 but I got bitten when I bought an engine for £400. A 15HP Mariner that I was told was in great condition... left my family and I stranded. Unlike places like eBay, with gumtree you have no recourse through the website itself unless you go through the small claims court yourself.

But that engine does look very nice! But just thought I would mention that!

My experience of Gumtree has been excellent, although I've only sold through it. Like anything, ask for paperwork and receipts, if you're buying.

If it's an engine, then you definately want to see it running from cold, ask straight-forward questions about history and run a compression test (you can do this with a Draper £20 tool) without mechanical experience.

On purchase, get it serviced or service it yourself, renew starter rope and impeller as a matter of course, new plugs, gear oil and check electrical connections.

Nice find by the way. The 25hp is the same block, so would be my preferred choice.

Could be a cracker!!??
But it may well be a dog!!

The photos were obviously taken before the onset of autumn - possibly a few years ago.
Could be it's been up for sale before and not shifted?

At the very least the images are not that recent so could be a bit rougher around the edges than depicted.

I would definitely get the compression checked as stated before. And go over it with a fine tooth comb.

Could be a little gem if it's been looked after but I would be cautious.

I bought a new tohatsu 20hp 4 stroke for my sib just for a little peace of mind.

You'd have very little recourse through ebay for goods that you had physically collected (and thus inspected) yourself. I'm sure gumtree advise against doing anything other that completing transactions face-to-face.

That is very true, as I've never collected something I bought through eBay it never crossed my mind!
