Leaving my sib in the car for a week in the sun

I have a bit of a dilemma. I'm off abroad next week, then inmidiately down to the south West. I'm parking at the airport.

I could fully load the car - sib, outboard, life jackets etc and leave it at the airport parking. This means I can be straight on the motorway down to the south West and will save me a couple of hours.

I'm not bothered about security, as its on-airport parking with fencing and cctv etc.

I'm more worried about melting the glue. Forecast is 19-20c next week, but obviously the inside of my estate car will be much hotter, even if I crack the windows open a little.

Am I worrying over nothing, or is this a relevant concern?

I personally think your worrying about nothing, 19°/20° isn't hot. Direct sunlight will probably heat the inside of the car somewhat, but even then I wouldn't be worried.

No, nor me re the SIB. The only thing that would concern me is the fuel tank??

Yes, it will certainly get a bit smelly in there, but apparently the autoignition temperature is 280C so I should be OK.

RIBase
I’d throw a couple of blankets or an old sleeping bag or similar over it, just to keep it out of direct sunlight. If it’s in the boot, try to park facing south.

If you close the vents on the tank and it gets warm the tank will expand, mine went like a beach ball.

Make sure its well covered and insulated. Maybe leave the window open a bit as well.

Don't open the car with a cigarette in your mouth when you get back....unless you fancy a quick hair trim.

Interesting fact is that if you leave a full decent petrol can in the sun there is no air gap so no fumes no worries,if you leave a can with the dregs in it will blow up like a beach ball , if you see what i,m saying
Must admit i wouldnt dare leave it full either

I'd try to leave the fuel tank empty - fill up en-route or once you get to Cornwall.

What colours the car?
I used to drive a silver Mondeo for many years. Anything left in the boot just always seems to stay nice and cool on a hot day.

Safe journey!

I once did it from Leicester to the Lizard in 5 hours. In an Imp. M69 hadn't been built & the M5 finished at Bristol. Long before the advent of speed cameras & the 60 mph NSL.

Worst was 12 hours for the same journey with all the roads as they are now - pretty much motorway & dual carriageway from Leicester to Truro.
Fatal RTC in the early hours at J30 on the M5 which wasn't on any of the R2 traffic reports & the road was down to 1 lane open.
Joined the back of the 3 lane tailback at about 7am by which time it was almost back to J29!

Not far short of that on the way home last year, articulated lorry loaded with paint on fire on the M5 not far up from Exeter. Motorway had been shut for a while & it was a 'guess the make' as there wasn't a lot left of the trailer unit.

ETA FWIW from Leicester I find it quicker to go the 'old' way. M69 to Coventry then A46 to Warwick, Stratford, Evesham & join the M5 at J9 Ashchurch/Tewkesbury.
Mostly dual carriageway.

You'll be fine. The amount of heat it takes to break down healthy glue is pretty high. It took 350+ degrees and a lot of elbow grease to remove my seat mounts.

Yes indeed... that motorway section around Bristol at anything other than one in the morning is should destroying for traffic.

120 down, 200 to go....

Saturday changeovers used to set off around 0200 to miss the traffic on the way there & 1800 on the way back for the same reason.
Now Friday at 0600 & back Sunday 1800.

Why does it (usually!) always seem quicker on the way home?

You will be glad to hear that the car hadn't exploded upon my return and I made it to Cornwall in about 4hrs, Sunday afternoon traffic was very good!

Been out a couple of times, but now have a leak. Will update my other thread.
