I wonder if the oil has forced its way out from somewhere due to expansion. Was it a particularly warm day. Failing that, that “scratch” may indeed be a crack.

I don’t know what outboard that is but it looks like a drain.

It did cross my mind that it was there before and when I looked at the edges there was no shiny new aluminium, I poked a screwdriver in (small one) it won't go in directly but will on a angle. So there is a cavity there. The oil did dribble out quickly. I have looked on what I thought was a correct parts diagram and there is no part that fits that area. When I was out on it few months back I did clout a rock that stalled it. ( on tick over) it's stored upright in my garage and I would have noticed this leak as it is dark in colour.
History = purchased second hand 2 years ago of flea Bay. Had signs of damage to the skeg. When purchased I store it upright, I noticed a pool of oil dripping off the skeg, egg cup full I took it the the marine shop thinking it was from the gearbox. He pressure tested it and said no . He recons I transported it the wrong way up. And it was the excess oil falling out. Its clean oil not the dark colour that was present last week. Its always laid the correct side up laid on carpet underlay to cushion it . It travels in the back of my ford custom van . Nothing sits on it. The dip stick is on the top mark so I think it may have been over filled.

One thing I don't get is I had a old mec 5hp 2 stroke. When I put it in forward gear it would un lock the tilt mechanism so if you hit some thing going forward the engine would lift on the strike. This tohatsu is locked in place when in forward gear. I understand it has to be in reverse. And has I said I bought it in lock down really wanted a 10 or 15 max but as you know it's what you get. It's knocking heavy at 55kg but puts a smile on face when 2 or less in the 3.8 honwave.

Is that picture taken upside down, is the deep scratch on the skeg?
Is the small hole threaded?

Not sure about the Tohatsu but my Mercury has 3 positions on the tilt lever. Fully locked down when in reverse, free to kick up if the skeg hits something, lock in tilted position. I'd presume the Tohatsu has something similar.

As I remember it, the actual gearbox only sits in the front of that bulb at the bottom of an outboard. The aft section is just a cavity, there for hydrodynamic purposes.

That hole is there for draining water (when the outboard is in storage) that comes out with exhaust gasses from the cooling system being dumped out thru the prop.

Any excess oil from the entire system is going to build up down there, stood upright and still in your garage coupled with a 300 mile journey on its back and a bit has drained out.

You're right to get it checked by a professional, but I bet that's nothing to worry about.

Hope I'm right and you get to use your boat.

update. The hole should be there and as some have said, its is a drain hole for the water. I had not noticed it before. So I took it there this morning, and gave him an update/history of the little drip it has, he said it was not the gearbox oil, he rang Tohatsu to see if there were any warranty calls for this problem =No. As we stod the engine up to put it on the carry frame oil again run out, He thinks its the crankcase seal that has gone. this would explain why it has weeped whilst I have had it.its a 2006 model so is the crankcase shaft worn? who knows. it will be a few weeks before he can get to it so I will update you all. thanks for your comments.

Its not a chance I really want to take, whilst I was in Cornwall in 2021 I bought a Suzuki 8hp 2 stroke for £350, it was just so that if I went on the honwave by my self the Suzuki was manageable. as you will know getting a boat and a 55kg outboard up a slipway is at least a 2 man job. so I put some fuel in the Suzuki and it fired up 2nd pull selected gears ok so I use that if the tohatsu is not fixed by 3 weeks' time when we go up to the lake district. In the future, I think I will always take both with me and run both as well just to keep them ticking over so to speak. crap happens and then a new day starts,
