Haha.. I wait with bated breath on the 2 stroke point....[emoji41]
Cancel culture also ticked me off when they took the sugar/glucose out of Lucozade. The entire purpose of the drink!! Another favourite lost to history..
100% agree the Lucozade... it was one of the early wtf moments as the original supplies dried up. Previously a couple of the small bottles were always in our boat emergency grab bag.
Re the Dysons have you tried the latest cordless models... very impressive for normal/heavy domestic use. They make the old corded models history... unless you are clearing up after building work.
Yes give or take depending on dealer/deal they are both £100 up or down from £1750. If looking at 2-stroke prices need to be wary as they are commercial items prices are sometimes quoted without VAT.
Was talking to a fellow sound recordist friend of mine today, we were wondering if the field recording element of our jobs would qualify us for commercial use! [emoji23] we’ve stuck microphones on trains, burrowed them into trees, and submerged them in lakes... the SIB would certainly get us to some unique recording locations!
I’m sure the quieter and smoother 4 stroke is more up our street anyway... but it did make me think!

Dear all: quick question, please. I found an outboard from a private seller, a Mariner 15 M (684C - S - 021649) 2 stroke, 15 HP, made in Japan. I'm assuming that since from '80s, it's made by Yamaha? Can someone confirm that it is ~1981/83 ? Are there still parts available, at least for maintenance (spak plugs, impeller, thermostat?) Thanks a lot to all, Florin
I've just gone through this process on the same engine. Yes parts all seem to be fully available. I'm pretty sure modern Parsuns are the exact same engine.
Year is difficult. The web says it's that S letter in the middle and that points to 1981 on the charts but if that letter was the year letter than they only ever made engines in 1981 and just sold that massive stockpile for twenty years.
When I was talking to BHG about mine they said that wasn't the year letter and that it should be stamped on the corner of the plate.
Hi-thanks for the reply.
Actually, I think the "S" was indeed in all charts - so I'd say it's not relevant for the year.
I actually found the info depending on the series number of the Mariner (this one is marked 15M). So, if you check this website, the model 15M: from the no 684-017040 - between the years 1981-184: Mariner: 9.9-20Hp
I also found another chart, slightly different and the series number falls within the range for 1982 (684-017041 to 684-023806). Please see pic/chart attached.
- Do you have more info about where to source the replacement parts, please?
- Do you think such an engine is a good investment at about 700 GBP/ 800 EUR ? (engine looks quite clean in the pics)
- Do you have any idea how heavy it is? (38 kg?)
Thanks a lot!
I just paid a grand for one. Beggars can't be choosers at the moment.
I've spent a further £200 refurbing it with original parts.
I called BHG Marine, spoke to a chap called Andy and he couldn't have been more helpful sorting the parts out.
The issue my motor had was that it had been clearly bolted to a tender for a very long time and for some of that time without any anodes so there was quite a bit of corrosion in the leg.
All sorted now and running beautifully.
I like two strokes and so long as the cylinders have good compression everything else is really easy to service.
Hi again – I would think, £1000, based on what I saw: it's a fair price. I would also say: £200 refurbishing it with original parts : good deal.
If you have an invoice with such parts from BHG Marine & you can post it here, I would be grateful. More generally,
- were you generally happy with the purchase?
- do you have any idea how heavy it is? (38 kg?)
- do you think such a Mariner ‘80s engine is a good investment as compared to, for example, a Yamaha 15CP 2-stroke from the 90s/00s?
Thanks again for your advice!
Yes, I only saw it was longsgaft after I posted it.
I was mainly trying to show that there are some good motors to be had on fb marketplace.
I've got my eye on a 9.9hp evinrude. Says it starts and runs but cuts out after a while. My guess is fuel pump or air leak on supply side. Bit pricey yet for effectively a non runner so I'm just waiting until he drops the price a bit.
I just missed a fletcher 16ft with 55hp Johnson on the back today.
If I'd messaged an hour earlier I'd have got it for 600 quid. Wasn't the tidiest example I've seen but was supplied a video of it in the water being put through its paces.
Worth a look for anyone who can't find what they are looking for on the Bay of E
Hi there,
New into this stuff.
What's so cool about Mariner 15hp 2 stroke?
I recently purchased a 2 year old 4.7m (15') aluminum floored SIB+15hp 2 stroke Mariner (2010)+electric pump (no trailer) for about £1,000.
I valued the boat+pump at £400, while the outboard at £600. And I'd post-purchase dissonance about why did I buy such an old outboard instead of a new one for a bit more price.
It's not 37 kg. It weighs 41 kg (long shaft). The cowl/decals have scratches, but the mariner dealer (in the middle east) says mechanically it's sound.
I was searching for reviews on that outboard so that I can decide if I should get rid of it already
.. and bumped into this thread. Surprised to see older ones sell for such prices....maybe the really old ones??
