Mercury/Mariner 15hp 2-stroke value

Hi All,
Just curious as to what you think about values of quality 2-stroke 15hp outboards?
I’ve been watching some on eBay and a mint 1990 example just sold for £1,680!
I guess now they are not available new for recreational boaters, the value of good pre-owned examples will only rise?
Also been keeping eye out for a Tohatsu 9.8, but as rare as hen’s teeth!
Many thanks,
Chris

That was a staggering price for such an early model. Usually you’d expect the very latest legally sold from post 2000 in mint condition to be £1250 or perhaps a bit more. That older type on Ebay would usually have been nearer £750-850.

Maybe the prices are rising due to the post lockdown and post jab hopes we can finally all get out.

I agree. Apparently it had been owned for 25 years and used as an auxiliary engine with low hours etc but still a bit rich.

Like you say, could be pent up demand ready for easing of lockdown

Puts me off the 2nd hand market for the 2 strokes. I own a 2005 8hp Yam in great nick and I paid 500 quid for it 6 years ago. I'm guessing it would fetch more now? It runs beautifully. I'm up for an upgrade as my SIB is good for up to 15hp. But then again.. At 3.1m I'd prefer a 3.8 or 3.9.. Think I'd better hush before I talk myself into it!![emoji23]

Unless prices have taken a massive and permanent jump in the last few weeks you should find a very nice 15hp 2-stroke of a similar age to your Yamaha for say £1250. At that price there is a good argument for one on a small SIB. Yes those 8hp Yamaha’s are nice in demand motors and yours would probably get 50% more than you paid for it.

Thanks Fenlander, your words of wisdom are always well worth hearing.

I was toying with a Parsun 4 stroke new for 1600 or so but as you've already pointed out it's a heavy beast.

If I could find a Yam 15hp 2 stroke in similar nick to my 8 for 1250 I'd bite their hand off!
Anyone?

As long as I can remember on here we have generally priced the 2 smoke big name 15s at £1100/1200 or so and that seems is still the case.

Same rule again always applies, buy a big name outfit boat + engine package *together* and hopefully accessories or trailer too. Don’t worry about the boat if it’s not exactly what you want, sell on what you don’t want. Repeat two or three times and you end up with the right outfit for peanuts.

Good advice, thanks Max.

I'll keep my eye out!

The market is what the market is. Given lock-down, then common sense has gone out the window. Used 2-stroke engines are in short supply, so it then comes down to what someone is prepared to pay.

2006 Mercury 15hp (standard-shaft)
£1,675

Mariner 15hp (standard shaft) - Barnet Marine
Year unknown, comes with 3 month Barrus warranty, £1,795

Interesting links.

Beware the second outboard which I reckon is the Tohatsu clone 15hp 2-stroke rarely seen in Mariner guise. If I’m right it is effectively a de-tuned 18hp and as such weighs 41kg not the light 35kg claimed.

Yes.. The weights have to have an eye kept on them as it were.

Looks as if new the Tohatsu 15hp short/tiller is the lightest at around 44kg. Suzuki at 47kg.

Must admit a 2 stroke at around 37kg is far more appealing than either...

You are very bad showing that unavailable minter to everyone who mentions needing such a thing. I’ve been lucky to own Mercury, Mariner & currently (but not for long) Yamaha 2-stroke 15hp motors all in that condition. They really are the ultimate SIB motor.

To be honest Fenlander, I wouldn't pay silly money for a 2nd hand 2 stroke 15hp. £1200 ish fine, but nowt silly. I'd rather buy a brand new Tohatsu 4 stroker at 2k than pay £1600+ for an engine that may be as old as it's power output! [emoji23][emoji106]

How effectively are the sales of these engines policed? If a genuine commercial user decided to sell his newish engine without serial number identification who cares? Especially now that Brussels has lost control

Would anyone spend £2.6K new though?
Ignoring the rules for a moment, they seem overpriced to me.

I must admit I'm tempted.. But you need letter headed paper/proof of business. The former is easy to produce but, though I'm self employed, my business has nowt to do with boats....[emoji6]

New startup.

Always amuses me how non-trade people get JTF cards all the time with the poorest of references.

Hence my earlier question.
Doubt anyone cares, interested to find out real life experiences.

Also wish we could buy full-power Dysons again
