Wise - very wise. The merest hint of faff and my wife gets fed up. And a heavy outboard is major faff.

Thanks for your advice Tommy….I bought the T32….and an electrice engine which my wife loves…but is slow! Im leaning to getting a Yamaha 6 hp - have you used it on the sea….Id like to use it in Poole harbour nd trips out to Old Harry…will it manage that?

Glad you're pleased with it, they're heavy enough on your own aren't they?
I used to have a boatworld 330pro and had a 5hp 2t on it and had it down the wyre channel from Knott end and it was ok but that was solo. At the time my son also had the same sib but he had a 6hp 4t and it was noticeably better.
I've just got back into sailing and I'm putting a small cruiser on Windermere 1st week of September on a mooring so I'll give you a shout and you can have a look at my tohatsu 6hp now it's main use will be for tendering

Thanks Tommy -love to.
And Fenlander - wife loves the quiet of the Epropulsion - there really is no sound! It’s a very gentle movement through water - you’re not going anywhere fast…. Like an slow quiet drive thru the countryside instead of charging along. Very pleasant but I think very hard if you are used to so much more speed - at a slow troll there is hours of battery life. I’ve ambled around the foot of lake Windermere - my aim is to go from fell foot to ferry nab and back and see how the power lasts……range anxiety! I do have a Johnson 4hp 2stroke so will take that along. I’m thinking that a bigger petrol outboard will be purchased - but no rush. Always think there’s time to get out and then along comes a baby sitting request - joys of being grandparents.

Thanks Coniston. I just have this draw to an elec outboard for river use. The river is so close to us yet we don't get onto it much for various reasons. Gliding along in silence could just be that prod we need. We'd always take the petrol to sea though. I was close to buying one a few months ago but accidentally bought an elec bike with the nominated 2023 boys toy money! I must say having been quite skeptical for years about cordless/battery/elec "devices" I'm getting more and more keen... not one has failed to impress so far.

Electric bike was what did it for me….allowed me back into cycling…..its a fantastic way to experience travelling. When the family wanted to gather in the New Forest…I spent a few days travelling down..it was brilliant. Not bought an electric car tho!

What's the wake like from these low power electric outboards? I presume it's fairly smooth and uniform?

The whole experience is different…..no holding on tight and experiencing the rush of speed and power…..its more meandering, pootling, quiet….so not necessarily what we bought our boats for….its another way of using our boats - a bit ‘Sunday Driver’ enjoying the countryside. You and see here things differently. So wake can be non existent. I think electric engines have a place, but definitely are not for everybody - as I said my wife loves it and doesnt want to use a conventional one - I miss the speed, distance travelled quickly, the thrill of crashing through ways too. They are expensive as well…

Totally agree. Life takes on a far more relaxed chilled out pace just pootling along at 3 or 4 knots in near silence going electric.

Having said, wouldn’t be without our gas guzzlers though. Seriously good fun hooning around at over 20 knots.

I've still got my 55lb Minn Kota trolling motor, never even took it out of the box. Never bought the battery for it.
