I agree with this. If you buy secondhand nothing much lost when selling disappointed with the 6hp. Otherwise get 10hp or 15hp which is the max rating on the transom.

Max rating or one size under is a general rule of thumb.

Thanks for all the replies!

I will be getting the 6hp Mercury from a place local to me, hopefully tomorrow.

I'm guessing I will need a short shaft for my boat, Excel Vanguard XHD 335?

I have noticed I may need to do a run in procedure, will this be described in the manual? do I do this in a bucket of water or something at home?

Is oil provided with the outboard normally?

Thanks

I swerved actually saying my choice but the Mercury looked the best deal overall at the moment so I reckon that'll be fine.

The dealer should do a PDI inc filling with oil and showing you how to operate.

99.99% likely to be a short shaft but don't take the word of a forum guy for this... check the spec of you SIB with Excel... or measure the transom and tell the OB dealer.

Running in is detailed in the manual and no not in a bucket apart from perhaps a go when you get it home for a few mins to get used to how it starts etc... it needs varying speeds and loads as the hours build (10hrs in total to run in I think?) to properly run in.

Hi Fenlander, can I push for your choice of 6hp please? It seems I really only Honda or Mercury servicing available near me, unless I am mistaken...

The price I've been quoted is more than I have seen online, £1039, but I will get the benefit of a bit of instruction I guess.

Thanks

Well at the moment I'd say for me the Mercury or Yamaha. I prefer the price, gearchange on front, through hub exhaust and slightly lighter weight of the Mercury. The Yamaha attracts for some build quality touches (which doesn't mean it will be any more reliable for you), the fact it can be transported on three sides... but it's more money and doesn't have the through hub exhaust which I like.

Honestly either would do you and from experience I'd say having a local dealer is important... I'm assuming your seller is a Mercury dealer?

BTW I reckon running in will be broadly two hours limited to half throttle and then eight hours with up to max throttle for periods... but not continuous max throttle.

Yes Beeston Marina is my closest I think and they have 6hp Mercury in stock.

Just spoke to Excel and they confirmed I need a short shaft.

Hopefully will get out in the next few days and get some pics up.

Thanks for all the replies!

Re dealers looks like the Mercury one is a doable 25ml round trip for you but the nearest Yamaha dealer a 110ml round trip... that would be a pain re service/warranty(however unlikely) visits.

I bought my boat from central marine services and were really helpful, will be getting a trailer through them.

Think they offer Suzuki mainly and I know they don't have 6hp in stock. Also, are they actually authorised to do the servicing to keep in warranty?

If the OP is going for a 6 HP motor, better check side older brothers say 8HP or whatever is available with same CC powerhead and weight. Will cost slight more but will push much better, plane faster and transport more load than a 6 HP with same CC. Personally when buying motors usually buy the max HP with same CC powerhead and weight. Investment wise.

A 2 strokes Tohatsu 9.8 HP has nothing to do with a Tohatsu 9.9 or 10 HP, the 9.8 is a 176 CC (26 Kg) the latter is 250 CC (42 Kg) a 16 Kg difference. Boaters usually confuse a 9.8 HP to being a 9.9 or 10 HP, which ain't so..

Happy Boating

The 6hp is the maximum in that powerhead range. The 8hp is another 13kg weight and 50% extra cost... completely different motor.

As I replied in another thread that 15hp Mariner is "old school 4-stroke heavy" at a gut busting 54kg. With smaller-medium SIBs its really important to get best "value" in HP vs weight.

Great motor for a fisherman's GRP boat left on a pontoon year in year out though.
