new tohatsu 9.8 2 stroke
hi, would anyone have any reservations about buying from here:
Tohatsu outboard engine 9.8hp | eBay
it's a new tohatsu 9.8hp 2 stroke for £1,375 and i'm looking at getting one for my new folding rib 360
it's a 2006 model - does anyone know if these engines have changed at all since 2006 i.e. is this the same engine that tohatsu still manufacture today, even though it's 10 years old?
thanks

AFAIK it is still the 2006 model.
You know you will have to pay duty and vat on the sale? I'm guessing with shipping it will take the total to something like £1800, for an engine which is technically an illegal import, 10+ yr old tech, will possibly difficult to get any warranty sorted and from a seller in Malaysia...
Don't know how the chanel islands compares but I'd need a very good reason...

Hi poly, no I didn't know about vat and duty. I thought the price would just be £1,375 and I'd collect in person - item location is Burbage..
What do you mean about the channel islands/ good reason?
Thanks

I might be misunderstanding Poly but isn't Burbage in Leicestershire??
Can't it be sold as 'used' even though NOS (not a legal description)?
Where does the CI and Malaysia come into it?

Ignore me, I was looking on my phone and I misread the country of manufacture as the location. The deal becomes much safer (and no VAT/duty issues) if it is in the UK, and you can pick it up in person. You might want to find out what the backstory is and the warranty position though.
My mention of CI's is because there is a dealer in Alderney who will sell you a 2 stroke.

Ah right I see, I contacted the dealer in the channel islands, however it's £600 more than the eBay one.
Thanks

I assumed this was in Leics as Max says... listing says for collection. I'd bet there's more than a 50% chance this is new new stock being sold as new old stock.
Before buying/travelling I'd want a photo of the ID plate with year/serial no.
Don't think it is the proper Tohatsu fuel tank either as the cap should have an integral gauge and the connector is different.
Also despite it saying there is a 12mth warranty I'd only buy if I was willing to deal with any issues myself and forget the warranty. The guy's had 8 different Ebay IDs over the past 9yrs!
If I really wanted to buy brand new I'd probably give the Gumtree guy another look...

At least it's all new in the box and someone on here has used him without problems.

Donegaldan bought a long shaft 9.8 a few years back from a RIBnet trade member - still in the plastic wrapper. They DO exist and maybe now that demand has risen, people are getting shod?

>>>maybe now that demand has risen
I think this Tohatsu 9.8 2-stroke has aquired an even more unique position now that even on the newer ranges the 4-strokes do not seem to go above 6hp for the same weight. For a SIB/FRIB around 3m the 9.8 really is the motor of choice for portability.
The Tohatsu 18hp 2-stroke did have the same market advantage but new 4-stroke models like my Suzuki 20hp EFI weighing in at just 3kg more have rather eroded the Tohatsu advantage in the around 20hp power. You may of course choose the Tohatsu for its simplicity which is fair enough... but that comes at a price as from the CI they are a good bit more than a new Suzuki 20.
I've changed my mind over the past couple of years re these grey import Tohatsu 9.8s... if I really needed to go lightweight I'd but a new one from one of these UK based sources and take a chance on warranty/insurance issues etc.

Yes that's my view re the warranty position with the 9.8. I'm just going to accept it doesn't really have one, which is a fairly small risk risk really.
Also that's well said about the 18hp tohatsu 2 Stoke, the advantage of the 4 stroke 20's far outweigh the 3kg saving

If it really is NOS then it's a fair deal - a nice 2006 used one goes for £1200 ish anyway.
But just call them up and pay cash on collection (including £150 or so on credit card for protection) - they must surely be open to do a deal 'outside' ebay as combined fees will lose them £150 on a BIN anyway??

I think I'll go with the gumtree option. It's a bit more expensive but someone else on here recommended him and I've been a put off by the multiple ebay ID's that was mentioned

Or you could buy my low hours 9.8 Tohatsu 2 stroke on a nice Avon 311 Rib, all sitting on a good combi trailer for 1600 pounds.

I'd consider that Duggie... sell the boat and trailer and probably end up with a good value outboard??

Guys, that does sound like a bargain. But I've committed to picking up the one from Gumtree. I'm getting it on Wednesday - £1,350 which I am happy with
Ray I don't think you'll have any bother shifting yours !
Thanks

Hi folks. Thanks for all the advice on this. I am now the proud owner of a new tohatsu 9.8hp 2 stroke. The chap I bought it from was a great guy to deal with and he has more to sell. Personally I think it's a bargain when you see what some of the old 2 strokes go for. It was brand new in box.
