I wonder why that's not done by boat owners more often?

It's fairly common here. I'm not sure, maybe there's some red tape where you are that complicates things.

On that Fish Locker Youtube channel that was mentioned earlier, which I think is Cornwall or Devon, the guy mentions that a boat share is an option if you can't afford your own. So happens.

I think boat share doesn't have the completions of boat rental ie: Health and Safety, commercial boat insurance, public liability insurance etc. I'm sure the list will be endless.

No I dont know you but you were the one that admitted you welched on a deal. I know me and I know I would not do that.......... QED

I literally can't find a way to edit that post. Not even a way to delete it. No options. I'll do it because Brin has said his kids read the forum.

I spent about 15 years using a motorcyclists forum, just like this one, except the daily discussion and "language and tone" of the place made this little spat look like a gentleman's disagreement. We spent 90% of the time arguing about nonsense and about 10% of the time talking about motorbikes. I eventually gave it up because it just became a place for miserable old gammons to whine about people who disagreed with Brexit.

I have one particular memory. A conversation, wasn't even an argument, where one of the regulars, who had many, many posts banging on about correct behaviour, being upstanding, constantly belittling people who didn't live up to whatever coincided with his own frequently broadcasted idea of decency. He was selling his house, and he was on the forum boasting about how he had carefully covered up some dreadful problem with flooring or rafters or something, and how he had saved himself 50 grand because the buyers were going to have to deal with it. In his mind, he was a paragon of virtue and this thing did nothing to sully it because he was doing a deal, and when you're doing a deal it's all about buyers beware and not acting in an utterly shameful way.

I'm actually not suggesting that the guy selling the boat was doing anything of the kind (well, maybe a bit). That's not what I'm getting at. My little parable is aimed at folks who want to wade in stating that they are far more upstanding than thou. Because you're not, your morals only extend as far as your relative comfort zone can reasonably take, and then it suddenly just reverts to self interest. And I'll also point out that yes, this is indeed an open forum, so if you want to make a post like that (nobody was asking you to tell us what an amazing person you are), you have to defend it same as me.

I'm quite prepared to be called a dimwit after doing a dimwit thing. As pointed out numerous times, I made a thread asking folks to well, not call me a dimwit . Steve's right, I don't know what I was thinking even bidding for it. Like I said, 12 hour shifts at work will have had something to do with it. But please don't say things like this, I mean really :

Such a shame that the anger he obviously has for himself and the predicament he finds himself is directed outwardly towards others.
Anyway, I'll shut up now .

I’m relatively new here myself so maybe speaking a bit out of turn……

But…..until this you’ve participated in a few threads, and I’m sure like a lot of us will have plenty to learn and possibly to share as well.
Although I hope you don’t mind if I discard any boat buying advice from you for now

We won’t always all agree, but as I think you now realise, there is a level that doesn’t really need to be crossed to get your own point across.

So just take a chill pill and enjoy the forum

Oh and by the way I appreciate you at least tried to delete the post and curtail your colourful language after thinking about my children perhaps reading your post.

But the truth is I was winding you up, and my kids are 23 and 19 and I’m ficken sure could learn their old dad a few new swear words

With hindsight, which is always perfect obviously, you could have come on here for advice while the bidding was going on and then stopped bidding to allow some other unfortunate to win it, presumably at a lower figure. That would have avoided all this.
Your clutch would probably still gone though...

Yeah. Even if I'd loved it, I would have ended up welching. Which is still on me.

In order to save money maybe it's time to learn to fix your own stuff? Watch a Youtube vid as I am sure someone has made one before. Most clutches are really easy, but do require some tools, jack stands, etc.

I was a motorcycle despatch rider for nearly 10 years. I've been fixing my own stuff for a long time, done plenty of spannering. Have a 125 to repair this weekend, in fact (electrics, sigh). Don't assume that, because I've done something idiotic, I'm actually useless .

Not doing a clutch on a Mk2 Ford Focus. Already watched the Youtube vid . Requires engine dropping a bit and stuff like that, I believe. And there's the inevitable "get about an hour in and find a stuck bolt/don't have the right tool/not entirely clear what I'm doing at this point" nonsense that I don't fancy putting myself in the way of.

On cars, I'm partial towards getting somewhere that's actually equipped to do the job, and grafting in some other way to find the money to fund it. On a job like this, anyway. I see clutch plate kits for my car for £100 to £200, with probably four hours labour. Mr Clutch (yes, I'm going to be at the mercy of fitters instead of actual mechanics, but it is an "easy" job - for them) will do it for £500.

Lots of stuck bolts on my motor .
