Oh my word, I need someone to tell me I'm not an idiot

I think you might. I just totally ebay impulse-bought this.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fishing-L...p2047675.l2557

I can't really afford it. I didn't go look at it before I bid. I didn't expect to win the bid lmao, but it's mine. I don't even know how long it is.

So, assuming I can afford the insurance (didn't check that either) and it's not a complete lemon, I'm hoping my sailing club will let me keep it there. If not, I do have a spare parking space outside my house. The question will be security.

I never do things like this .

I'll have to sell my SIB I think... .

Google Dijon 14, which is what it is, and have a read before you pick it up.

They have a bad reputation as a sea boat.

Engine would go nicely on a 4m Searider however!

Boats ay, I bid on one yesterday and I'm relieved I never won it tbh. The one you have brought looks a decent buy tbh, those engines are bullet proof and probably worth £1k on its own. If its a decent trailer then there's another £500, the boat .......maybe £200.

Christ, I'm very glad you said that. I've not handed over the money yet. I think I'm about to earn myself some bad ebay rep, because I won't be buying that.

Tinker's breakdown of the money makes me not want to bother. If I thought I could turn it around for a profit I might bother, but to be honest I could do without the hassle.

Disappointed, but appreciated folks, cheers. Back to looking for 9.9hp for the SIB then

Sometimes I amaze myself. Long days at work, tired, crazy decision making. Step away from the keyboard Croolis .

Yep if you want something like that look at Bonwitco, Shetland Fast Fisher, Arran etc models around 16ft.

I agree you nearly have your money in the engine if it's a good one.

Was drink involved too….and I thought I jumped in some times!

Looks like a guy who has several “project” boats on the go! Or maybe a dealer.

Hopefully the boat itself has been done to a safe/decent standard and if the OB and the trailer is ok, perhaps not a bad buy looking at similar.

Not the best of reviews online for the boat from a safety aspect, but that outboard would certainly make it shift a bit!

https://www.worldseafishing.com/thre...jon-14.147367/

Maybe have a look at this fish locker guy on YouTube who’s got a few videos on buying and owning small boats, before you go any further, and the better half finds out

Of selling it under a legal binding contract and having the buyer back out?

I have gotten out of purchases on Ebay by contacting the seller and communicating to them that the item was not what I needed or expected, and we mutually agreed to not go forward. I would NEVER just not pay and stick them, expecting negative feedback.

That sounds like a bit of virtue signalling from you without knowing what I've done or said to the guy or how he's responded. Go you <cheers>.

Meanwhile, back in the real world - that Fish Locker guy, I've watched a bunch of his fishing stuff (I don't fish myself - yet!) and is partly what has inspired me to look at boats like those. I didn't see any of his boat advice vids though, perhaps I should have a look .

Don't like the idea of bidding and then walking away. Hey - you asked, so that's my opinion.

Mariner 40hp is worth having. You could try WSFF (World Sea Fishing Forum) - if anyone is looking for a project. They are worse than Ribnet - no prisoners!

For the record, neither do I. I've been at the sharp end of it more than once myself. But I've done it, and as a 50 year old grown man, I've made my apologies. He'll have to live with the consequences, and that's my bad.

He might have helped himself out by stating the boat model in the ad, though. Presumably deliberately left out to catch someone like me, so let's not get too misty eyed about it.

I do get what the guys are saying, but it sounds like you’ve now contacted him to explain your mistake on bidding.

Personally I would have offered a few quid as an apology to cover any fees he might have had, then possibly he will just right it off with no hard feelings or negative feedback.

It could be he purposely didn’t name the boat, but really that’s up to the buyer, (impulsive or not) and hardly his fault, so I just wouldn’t feel right if it was me, to just say tough on him.

We’ve all been there and done similar I’m sure, so I wouldn’t beat you’re self up, but the way you treat the other party would show the person you are (outwith being an impulsive idiot)

My mistake was Whisky, Ebay and Amazon which isn’t a good mix!

But anyway lesson learned and all that crap, and maybe check in with the good people here before you jump in again.

Very poor show bidding, Winning and then pulling out. Don't care what you say it is very bad form. You asked so people have told you. Very dishonourable

Actually, I didn't ask for a lecture in morals at all, I was asking for advice on what I'd bought. And I frequently find that, on the internets and otherwise, people who preach about fine upstanding behaviour, frequently let it all go by the board as soon as they are the ones likely to be disadvantaged by abiding by their own alleged, mighty standards. Hypocrites, no less.

You don't know me and I don't know you.

To be fair - what and where are you planning on using it?

A bot of bobbing about on the Trent or in a sheltered bay, it'll probably be ok. Out in the North Sea not so..........

It's a moot point fella. Even if I'd wanted it, I'd be cancelling it now anyway, no matter how much it hurt the guy and whatever the morals. Simply can't be done. No new outboard for the SIB now for a very long time either.

That outfit was particularly iffy in that this particular craft on the used market often has a much smaller old motor fitted. If that 40 runs well it has the potential to drive that hull into real trouble.

I'm actually really straight with my Ebay dealings and overall Ebay has been very good to me... but I just shrug my shoulders and move on if someone lets me down re a purchase. I'm sure this seller will be the same and probably this isn't the first time he's struggled to get a boat away having "strengthened" a transom with some untreated softwood from Wickes and done a rough paint job with a spare tin of Dulux.

I really can't find it in me to bash a fairly new member for this situation.

I'm quite prone to an impulse buy myself, but If the condition is as described, you didn't do too badly for the boat, engine and trailer imo. You could rent it out while the fishing season is still in swing and get a good portion of your money back.
