If its any use I can get my 3.3 metre to plane with a 5hp four stroke and get up to 12mph. That's one up, minimum kit.

Planed my bombard ax3 with a 3.5 HP Johnson....huge fun one up.
That had a slat floor to. Hopefully Trevor G is still getting good use from it:-)

Now u got me thinking again i was thinking about a slat floor because they are so much quicker to set up but heard from people they dont plane and it is three hundred quid cheeper than a v air floor

Mister P, thanks for your kind words, just trying to give my one cent, doing my best in a foreign language and having great time at Iboats. Some side notes :
1-If possible try the size and floor you intend to buy with your 4 HP, if it could be a demo boat, or a good Samaritan boater to lend you one, the better. So to invest well.
2-Planing or not planing will be related to sib pressure, hull drag if it's a slat, Inflatable V, inflatable keel sib, engine 100% operational, driver weight and distribution.
3-A 270 sib has about 1.50 mtr available transon, bow deck space, if placing a tiller extension and moving yourself towards front you will end as a figurehead.
4-An air floor sib is very fast to inflate, low volume, high pressure. Second fastest after a slat floor.
5-Been trying to plane a 270 rib with a 5 HP with no avail whatsoever, not even driving sitting at bow, rib is short and wide, too much hull drag to overcome with my weight.
Happy Boating

I agree you dont need an extension but if you are 'big boned', have short arms, only 4hp and you want to plane, then a tiller extension makes it easier.
You can use the other method - lock off the steering and the throttle and sit at the front steering by weight alone. However that method can have issues

We have a 2.9m excell air floor with the inflatable keel which planes easily with a 5hp yamaha
i think the 4 & 5 is exactly the same engine so you may be able to tweek the 4hp a little
ours planes easily with me in (13st) i just lean forward as the yam has 360 degree steering as well as fnr which is handy but i guess awkward with an extention
it used to get out with one of the kids in too but as there bigger now it just wont quite do it
the air floors are usually lighter & I think kinder on your knees & easy to set up
hope this helps

I have a Zodiac 2.85m SIB (solid floor, air keel)
The SIB planed easily with a 6hp on it, with two of us on board (combined weight 20 stone) , achieving 15mph on the GPS.
It would take a few seconds to "get out of the hole"
However with a third person it would not plane, even with a child as the third person.
I replaced the engine with a Tohatsu 9.8 2-stroke which weighs the same as the 6hp 4-stroke and now the SIB goes like a rocket one-up with no "getting out of the hole" just open the throttle and it's off, 20mph without any effort at all and that's not flat out.
With two of us on board it still planes easily with a couple of seconds delay while it gets going, then achieves an easy 20mph.
The boat is rated to an 8hp and I think 20mph is really as fast as it is designed to go.

How much would a longer boat (3.6m) with air floor (active-v) affect this?

I had a suzumar 2.7 air floor for a few years as a tender. It wouldn't plane with a Suzuki 4 4 stroke but would plane with a Johnson 5hp 2 stroke if i sat far enough forward. I used a tiller extension ( in reality 1/2 a tiller extension as I cut it in half). Otherwise being only 5'7" I could hardly reach the tiller with my fingertips and nearly fell out as a consequence due to poor control.

Well took the plunge and went and got my self a 2.7 air v floor honwave it dosent plane with my 4 hp on it but i think the floor was under inflated so im going to have a play with pressures and trim next time out still very pleased with it
