PVC D-RINGS Yes or No

Hi Fellow Sibers
I am looking to buy 2 D-Rings to put at the front on either side of the tubes on my Elling KB 350

Question is
Would this be better connecting to D-Rings when winching my Sib onto the trailer as at the moment I connect the winch strap to the front grab handle when winching onto the trailer.

Can you tell me if just connecting to the front handle is strong enough and not a problem or should I also put D-Rings on the tube as well, If this is the case any recommendations where I can buy PVC D-Rings.

Thanks in Advance

I don't ever need to winch a SIB but for towing it if ever needed my favoured arrangement is a D-ring either side and the ropes fed through the bow handle so yes I'd go for the D-Rings.

Loads of suppliers such as...

Just make sure to stick 100% to the procedure to get a strong bond.

Are you winching the boat onto the trailer on land? I imagine that would exert quite a force at various points. Certainly a good idea to spread the load and have dedicated fixings.

If I'm loading mine onto the trailer on land I tend to walk it up as far as I can from the front and then go to the back to lift and shove.

I cant seem to open your link Fenlander

TmMorris,
I put it on the trailer on land, with the trailer unhitched Like you I walk it up as far as I can onto the bunks of the trailer from the front with the trailer tilting down at the back,

I have blocks either side of the wheels stop the trailer going forward or back, then lift the trailer from the towing hitch as far as i can so the launching wheels are on the ground taking the weight while doing this I winch the rest of the sib onto the trailer.

This is another reason putting 14in launching wheels on plus it is easy to launch and retrieve from the water.

Hope this all makes sense.

I think I copied my set up from Jeff, can't remember (an age thing!)

D ring either side of the bow, bridle between the two fed through the front grab handle/D ring with a carabiner fitted to the bridle after the front grab handle/D ring.
Works well when I use the winch but that's in water.

Makes perfect sense. It's pretty much what I do. Towards the end of last season I got into the habit of putting everything together the day before and putting it on the trailer and then putting it back on the trailer at the end of the day having used the launch wheels to take it out.

I think that where we probably differ and why I'm feeling ok to rely on just the single forward D is that once the boat is half in the trailer with the slack taken up by the winch I go and push from the back and one of my daughters just gently winds the winch to take up the slack so there's never really any strain going onto the D.

If I was doing it all completely solo then I have to consider the route you're looking at for belt and braces.

I do it mostly on my own Tim,
The best way I have found, pulling it as far up the trailer as pos on the launch wheels, lifting the trailer high at the front and rest of the way using the winch, up until a metre from the front the wheels support the back then drop the trailer and winch the rest of the way.

I am lucky as where I live there is a concrete ramp so I pull it up using the grab handle, otherwise be more difficult one handed.

Think I will carry on doing it this way all goes well won't need the D Rings ?

I think what's important is that you'll know if you're putting too much strain on a part.

I use the steel painter eyelet on the bows of mine as that has the extra patching because it's designed to get heavy loads but when I first tried using the winch on its own I could see the amount of strain I was putting on that fixing and while it would probably be ok I did decide to err on the side of caution and employ low quality, high cost child labour to do the winching while I pushed at the back like a dumb donkey. If I were on my own then I'd just launch and retrieve using the trailer in the water.

Thanks Tim
Normally I pull it so far off of the trailer by the grab handles on both side of the tubes at the back onto it launching wheels then get to the front and wheel it off via the front grab handle with no problem as I only have a 9.8 4stroke on the back.

When taking it off or putting it on the trailer I take everything out of the boat first so basic weight of boat and outboard.
