River Dart

We've been exploring the river Dart the last couple of days. It really is a lovely stretch of water, ideal sibbing territory. After working in the area for years it's nice to actually get out and have some leisure time on it! This evening we headed up to the maltsters arms in Tuckenhay and tomorrow we're either headed for Totnes or out round the coast to Blackpool sands. Only frustration with 4 up in the aerotec we can't quite get on the plane and stay in the speed limit. Stunning scenery though.

It's a great river I haven't explored much past bow creek on to totnes but it's on my bucket list
We were at Dartmouth for the regatta Saturday, traffic in the estuary was closed for the Tornado display, lots of people, lots of silly craft I don't think the steam powered sib will catch on!

Dartmouth regatta truly is silly season. The town fills up with porches, range rovers & ferraris and long empty houses echo to the calls of hugos and camillas on their summer stop overs. But it keeps me and the rest of north devon in gainful employment

Took my RC585 there for a few days last year. Had a great time. Took the tide up to Totnes one day. Sib is probably better suited to the river. We saw this chap on a mooring on the way back from The FBI at Dittisham one day. Click image for larger version

We took the boat out to sea very briefly tonight but it was too choppy for the kids and also the wind swung round making any of the coves we planned on visiting too much of a lee shore. So pottered around checking out the castle, bayards cove and the boat float. Checked out the tiny summerhouse on the promontory by warfleet, recently sold for 750k or thereabouts. Could be my next building project and easily the most challenging.

Mackerel at the entrance to the Dart is where it is at! 35 in 15 minutes is my record this year and all over the place in the SIB if you can make it past the entrance with wind over tide you can get most places in a SIB if crazy I mean clever!

Silly season with Mackerel this year, running late but when they came in it was easy pickings, we set by the rocks outside the entrance and filled bucket after bucket. Some good coves towards Brixham if you get chance to veer left.

Scabbacombe is one of my favourites, although can be choppy on the way back.

The Range can be a nasty piece of water with wind v. tide although it rarely looks rough
