RNLI on TV - Saving lives at sea

Was out tonight but will watch on I player - I support the RNLI and get fed up with those who say it is a rich charity etc.
Having had an opportunity to spend time onboard with a crew several years ago (via work and not in distress) I have nothing but the utmost respect!

Just watched it over lunch. Excellent programme. Coincided with my Gov renewal letter arriving this morning... happy to add another year to my 30+ year membership.
I was not expecting the Blackpool flipover and that does make you think... in my case reinforcing why it's so important to do everything possible to avoid putting the family into that type of position.

Aye, they were lucky they were going to be seen by Coast Guard Rescue Team etc. Those handheld flares probably weren't going to do much! VHF not much use if it's upside down in the boat.
They didn't stick with the boat and left their mate. I know it's easy looking on from the comfort of my sofa but I was a little surprised. I was also surprised by the speed of them getting washed away though!
The guy who got washed off the rock was also pretty dodgy!
Wondering what next week will bring!!

Watched the programme, enjoyed it. Spear fisherman rescue off cliffs scary, amazing and heroic.
Also slightly surprised by inshore sib flip. Not wishing to be negative , but would they really leave a missing submerged crewman and swim away from the upturned sib. Ended up near / under pier structure yet upturned sib didn't drift with them. Perhaps missing something but doesn't feel quite right to me, although feel guilty even mentioning it.

Just shows how quickly you get separated from the safer haven of an upturned boat and don't think they had much chance of looking for their mate. Big hats off from me for all in the RNLI & anyone that gives up there time to help others.

RNLI Saving lives at sea.
Finally something worth watching on the TV last night on BBC1 at 9pm. What great footage of the fantastic brave volunteers dealing with various rescues in some tricky places and bad conditions,3 more episodes left cannot wait everyone remember to donate hopefully none of us will need them. 👌🏼

The were being hit by it. They needed to get to the windward side so they wouldn't get hit. But not sure how easy in that water it would have been.

Well - while I was surprised too - Once they separated from it they weren't swimming they were being washed away. Not sure if they expected that to happen. I suppose they thought the only hope for getting their mate out if he was underneath was to right the boat and I suspect they knew that wasn't going to happen in those conditions so they needed to avoid being knocked out by the boat.

Before I retired. I worked for the merc/mar distributer. I used to go out to Cowes and R.N.L.I. stations to do repair work , out on the water wet testing, well someone had to, and the company I worked for paid me to do it. I went to one station and went out on exercise with them. Most of them made a good cup of tea as well. All as mad as haters ,in the nicest possible way though. No dis-respect intended.

Much better produced that the typical "TV rescue fly on the wall" stuff - they stuck with a story all the way through rather than jump around and then "remind" us at regular intervals what we've just seen.

its an inevitable fact that when they are on a shout there are other rescue assets in the vicinity, whether CG, Police, Ambulance, other LB's, Helo's etc. However the flares meant even a member of the public watching was likely to realise it was not just a training exercise.

They are in regular contact with HMCG when on an op, so failing to respond to VHF (especially in those conditions) would have raised concerns.

Blackpool has two D class and an Atlantic 85 rib. I suspect one or both of the other boats were also on the shout, or were crewed up and standing by. Even at a single boat station shore crew and boat crew that didn't make it onto the boat will hang about ready to wash down and refuel the boat (and refuel the crew!). Nobody is going to want to leave the station and head home until the boat is safely back home.
Flare would be the best way of alerting them and getting the fastest response.
