Safety priorities

If you had just £100 which piece of safety kit would you buy (apart from life jacket, anchor, backup engine)

Bit of an odd question but regardless of cost it's pretty foolish to go out without LJ's and if going to sea then an anchor and a VHF as bare minimums and a big dollop of common sense and planning re' passage/weather/tides etc.

Not much else you need apart from oars/mobile phone/something to attract attention*/clothing etc- *our folding yellow bucket and orange anchor cover doubles for this. Plus a load of other stuff as per the sticky ^^^ 'what kit do you carry on your SIB;.

I think he means he already has the above.

Has to be handheld VHF for me

Yep, thanks for the constructive help... I do indeed have the above... I just wanted to know what people would buy (over and above the basics) if they had £100

I'd go with a PLB, although for a £100 it would probably have to be second hand

Sorry if the answer offends, I hoped it was constructive too.

What I meant was why pick an arbitrary figure (eg £100)?

Why not list exactly what you have, where you go boating, what experience/qualifications you have etc and then it will be much easier to suggest exact items?

Also see the current topic on training for beginners with much discussions regarding PLB, VHF ETC:

VHF above PLB.

Assuming you have anchor, lifejackets and backup propulsion eg engine or oars.

I would say VHF and flares. I'm sure you can get those two in the budget.

Erm... because he has £100 to spend on safety kit, so no good naming a £600 life raft ...

Both for under £100? Perhaps with a second hand vhf and a limited set of flares. Flares are expensive.

If you are going to sea and you haven't got one, definitely a handheld VHF.

In answer to the original question....
I'd go with Handheld like others...good coms is the foundation of safe Boating

A good loud whistle is good and really cheap!...and I'm not talking about the cheap lightweight plastic things!...A good old "Acme thunderer" is a good "starting" point and can be bought for a few pounds...and comes in handy for everyday hailing people on shore and other craft/water users with no coms.
Apart from the usual couple of good Torches..I always Carry a few Glow sticks in various colours.
I was anchoring overnight at one of my fav camping spots some years ago and lost my Nav lights...a couple of red and green light sticks taped to the A-frame made me sleep a lot better while the RIB was at anchor 200m away In the Bay.

Ofcourse carefully checking and inspecting (and Maintaining!) your Craft..Kit and..Trailer on regularly is probably the best tip of all....and completely free!...The checking Bit anyway!

I'd give the Mrs £100 to go shopping. It might not be much safer but I'd certainly enjoy it more.
