Schoolboy error!
Haha! So, I took the old plugs out of the Johnson 3 hp 2 stroke, decided they looked tired, carefully wrote down the number BR6HS-10, searched, bought some, checked the correct gap in the manual, re-gapped the new ones to the figure in the manual and installed them. The engine seemed better at first, but then soon started its old tricks.
I took it into the local outboard specialist. He checked it over, swapped the plugs for the right size...
It was only after I got home I realised that I had checked the manual for the correct gap, but had not properly checked that the pair I was taking out was the correct sort! I'd bought it 2nd hand and I had simply copied the previous owner's mistake.
Stupid schoolboy error, shared here that others may learn from my folly.
On the plus side, the nice chap at Lincoln Marine Services cleaned the carb, checked the motor over and pronounced it a "good little motor".
