i see you have asked to join the scottish sib outing not wanting to dampen your enthusiasm but a 3.2 is a very small boat for such a demanding SIB outing i have the equivalent of a 3.8 SIB and consider it the smallest boat i would use on these adventures just my opinion with the experience of long trips in some challenging conditions.

See this video.

Most of us who are not keeping our sibs on a trailer towed by the car need a way of getting the outfit to the water. If you set it up by the car and load with even just the outboard you won't be able to carry it. Even the sib alone may be too difficult to carry unless a very short distance.

So we will usually have either a launch trolley or transom wheels which can be removed or flipped into the up position once launched. Then you can set the sib up with OB, fuel tank and all your kit to trundle it to the water.

You may wish to think of what happens if you reach a destination where you want to pull the sib out of the water for a lunch or picnic etc. With transom wheels that are flipped up when travelling on the water you can put them down and pull the outfit from the water at a destination beach or slipway.

If at your coast location it gets busy and there is the possibility of having to park and setup some minutes walk from the water transom wheels are a life saver.

The Honwave air floor takes just one specific transom wheel type where you pull a pin out to move them from down to up. Here they are in the up position...

3.2 will do for now but I’d be surprised if you didn’t upgrade the first time you go to sea.

It must be difficult being new and having all of us with our opinions!

Enjoy your sib. Coniston is a great first place to try it. Launch at the bottom car park or the slipway at Coniston.

Enjoy!

Have a look at this thread from three years ago. In my first post there are pictures of me trundling a couple of previous outfits the few mins walk from parking spot where we setup to the slipway.

There's no doubt 3.8m was the safe bet advice but don't want Cumbria to think he's bought something unsatisfactory because he hasn't. Our first sib was a 3.1m Zodiac with 9.8hp and we used that for a few years on Scottish west coast holidays... including at times with two adults, 11+13yr old and small dog.

Here just with the girls heading down Loch Caolisport into The Sound of Jura...

Are you thinking this means you don't need wheels... if this is at say a lunch picnic stop what will you then do with the boat regarding waves/tide after you've got out?

It must be difficult being new and having all of us with our opinions!

our opinions are based on experience though gazz it must be said, its up to the OP but he has limitations as well as his boat choice which he needs to know and as you suggest inland lakes are the way to go to hone his skills and get a feel for his set up choice before as i mentioned a circum nav of mull. as david says nothing wrong with a 3.2 in the right conditions with the knowledge needed to use it IMO this forum is an absolute mine of info for the nubbie and experienced alike and should be shared

Being safe at sea (original question) is about knowledge and the application of the things learned. PB2 course is more important than a 0.6m longer boat in my opinion. Definitely get the basic kit, radio, anchor, lifejacket, wet suit (5mm 2 piece?) or dry suits etc before venturing out anywhere.

You'll have great times Cumbria, be sure to keep us updated about your progress and some pics would be fantastic.

Hi Cumbria I think your making a mistake with the 3.2 we have all been at this point and realized that the bigger sib should have been purchased from start but only you can make that decision personal I would haven't gone for the 3.8 on the advice of the forum members remember that wee have all had the experience but time will learn you like it did us.
As for the mull trip Iam afraid that you experience is lacking and it is for intermediate and seasoned sibbers for this trip there will be another opportunity for you to attend a sibing meeting this year once have finished all the mull trip planning a will be putting up the second trip which is a two day event at the weekend best of luck with your choice of boat HH

Mistake... too harsh. Cumbria has ordered the 3.2 and only time will tell if with his operating area, crew and overall use an upgrade is needed but this can be in time. I think his original idea of a 3.0 alloy floor would have been a mistake but he listened to advice then mixed it to his own views and ended up with a decent choice.
