Seagull 5hp on a 4.5 CRRC

I found a mint. new old stock 1985 Seagull 5 HP I would like to use as a back up
on my modified Avon 4.5 CRRC that lives off shore. I'm not concerned with the 47lb wt on the heavy duty bracket I have, but being that the spark plug is in the open I have concerns with shorting. Any waterproof bits out there you guys know of and what do you think of having the old bird as a back up lunk? I know she's a durty bird, but a strong one.

I'll get some pix of it tomorrow.

Cheers

Wouldn't worry about it. Seagulls have been around for many years - my first involvement with them being around 45 years ago - & most had the working parts exposed to the elements with little problem. Main issue IME was plugs fouling & it was normal to carry a spare - or two - to swap. Just be careful to avoid dropping plug spanner etc into the water!
Couple of links for you:
Saving Old Seagulls: Free British Seagull information, Engine serial number identifier, advice, forum and spare parts.
and:
Welcome to Classic Seagulls Worldwide - Classic Seagulls

ETA You could consider putting a waterproof hood over it whilst not in use, but I have reservations about these as being waterproof any condensation is going to be stuck in there.

Seagull 5 hp

Here's the Seagull hp, used the site paintman posted to spec her out (thanks again paintman) Shes a Silver Century Plus 90 long shaft with Amal carb and Wipac Mk 3 CD spark made in May of 1985 . Looks like a great motor to pass down to the my young boy some day.Hope to have her in the boat shed in a few weeks.

Cheers

That is a very special Seagull, there are very few like that around.
The spark plug cover is, indeed, a weak area so I would recommend a replacement rubber one, readily available from "Saving Old Seagulls".
Beware, the external finish of the motor will rapidly deteriorate if constantly exposed to the salty elements. This will not cause any operational problems but you will almost certainly lose the current uniqueness of a pristine Seagull

I have some old waterproof Military jeep spark plug boots I'll re-opp and fit a rubber snorkel on the carb. I'll take good care of her with a fresh water rinse after use but she's going to get some patina.

Cheers

I would normally sing the praises of seagulls but having used an open cowl Johnson as an aux I would thoroughly recommend a poly bag over the top of it as your main's leg will jet spray into places you would never think possible!
