Should I name my SIB....

I was wondering, boats usually get named, but should I name my little 2.8m SIB? My wife thinks that we should.

yeh why not, and if you use a VHF radio then you can spell it out with the phonetic alphabet ,when doing a radio check

Well, I went to the Marina today to buy a "30 day explorer" which has 30 x 1 day passes for £80, allowing use of the boat on the canal.
Looking at the book when I was filling it in, it seems like the first one they've sold since February. I bet most people don't bother.
The boat has to have insurance, and a name....so I had to think one up there and then.
Also there is a limit of 4hp for the engine.
I will have to peel the "6" off the back of the engine and replace it with a "4" then I'll be OK.

Just fit a cover over it, keeps it looking new too

some port authoritys require a name on even the smallest of boats and craft on the bows and stern ,

i had the same at a marina he had not sold one for months and months
it used to be that if you were caught by an inspector you had to pay double the day fee ,so a lot of day boaters took there chances ,,anyhow dont know if its right but i was told by a marina they dont work on week ends so unlikly to get caught and it was the larger craft using locks that were the problem ,....it used to be max 4 hp for canals and 10 hp for rivers and for day use, you could not use locks unless the boat is regesterd with the b/w,,and a minimum of one moths ,,fee ,,,mart

Hmmm.....I feel a bit of a chump for buying one now! I remember when CB became legal in the 1980's you were supposed to buy a license and I did the decent thing and went to the Post Office with my £10. "Oh, a CB license," said the nice lady. "We've never sold one of those before!"
Still, I suppose that my £80 will go towards canal maintenance, which can't be a bad thing.

I would personally not feel a chump for stumping up what is a pretty minimal amount per day on the inland license scheme operated by British Waterways. Call me an easy mark, but I would rather be within the regulations than skating by on the skin of my teeth.

Like was mentioned on another thread regarding insurance with bigger engines how do you stand not having a permit or license on a waterway if you have a accident.
If the boat wasn't meant to be there due to no license will the insurance pay out?

knowing insurance companys i doubt it very much ,,,though your more likely to get squashed with a barge than do any damage with a sib ,even grp boats are not suitable for some canals where large steel barges are in use ,,unless you run over some one and swimming is forbidden on canals ,,,though i have known canoe /kayaks run into the transoms of old plywood boats and sink them ,,,pic of one of our local residents ,,,local marina wont have him in ,,,,,dont know why ,,,lol
