Should outboard lock in vertical position?

Sorry if this is a really dumb question but should my outboard (Honda BF6) lock when in the full vertical (running) position? It obviously locks when tilted but is free moving when down.

It shouldn't lock when fully down.

Definitely not - you want it to be able to move backwards if you hit something!

It may not be that simple.

On my Suzuki DF20A the lock is manual and the advised normal running position is locked.

When it is fully tilted out of the water... having moved the lever to the release position... you have to move it to the lock position to release the tilt so it then clicks locked by default when down. The release position of the lever is only advised when in shallow water and moving slowly.

You say it like i should not have mentioned it, like everyone should know that? If someone has not come across it before they may be struggling to lift the engine when it's in reverse (seen it happen)

Actually - I was more thinking that I should have mentioned it myself! Never even occurred to me - I'm a Forward & Neutral man myself

Did have to rack my brains on that one, then remembered a chap struggling to get his boat on the trailer, as his engine was hitting the ground as he couldn't get it up, was in reverse

Should outboard lock in vertical position?

Check your manual or download a copy from honda.
Check tilt lever and adjusting rod .
My honda 9.9 2015 and 2000 both locked in all tilt positions. It may be possible that your adjusting rod is missing.

Try a Merc/Mariner 15 - the 'one hand' tilt, trim, lock in-built mechanism is genius and works a dream.
