Sib coding?

I have been asked about SIB coding. I checked mgn 280, which is a little generic. I then checked the archives on here and saw the post about coding for a sib from a mother vessel to a beach.
But I think that the question I was asked is a little more task specific.

What coding would a sib, (zodiac future mk 2, with 30hp outboard), need for hydrographic surveying.
I am assuming it is within a tidal estuary. They will want the shallow draught of the sib where the big vessel cannot fit.

Thanks in advance for any constructive advice.

Mgn280 still applies if the boat is being used “at sea”. A tidal estuary may not actually be “at sea” within the regulations.

Is the intent to run it as a daughter craft or on its own?

Sorry, on its own.

So - if it is sea as defined by the act...

Category 6: To sea within 3 miles from a nominated departure point(s) named in the certificate and never more than 3 miles from land in favourable weather and daylight.
Category 5: To sea within 20 miles from a nominated departure point named in the certificate in favourable weather and daylight.
Category 4: Up to 20 miles from a safe haven in favourable weather and in daylight.

Cat 4, 5 or 6 would be your requirement. Cat 6 may be enough - IF you only want to code for one port...

You would presumably only survey in good weather and daylight?

But you will still need to carry a LOT of kit youd probably think pointless. The worst being a life raft.

You'd be better taking an approach to either be a daughter craft, or depending on the estuary a local council licence possibly with two craft of similar size if need be to cross cover.

I would check the water's classification. MGN280 reference of "going to sea" refers to vessels proceeding seaward from categorised waters. Otherwise it will fall under the inland waterways code.
https://www.gov.uk/government/public...nger-boat-code

If you read this you'll find, that unless it has been adopted as regulation by a relevant harbour authority, compliance is voluntary.
I have discussed and confirmed this with Clydeport's assistant harbour-master in regard to use in the Clyde estuary.
Your problem may be if you're using the boat in different harbours different local regulations might apply.
I can't remember where it was I read it but I'm sure there is also some mitigation for vessels under 6 mtrs. Worth looking into.
