SIB/ RIB up the River Severn

Anyone taken a RIB/SIB up the Severn, looking at starting near to Gloucester and heading North (Planning a couple of days trip for windier times) ?

Recommended Slipway?
Camping Spots?
Dealing with Locks?

Cheers

For the locks you will need a river license , they will all be manned locks that low down the Severn and they ask for your license number on entry.

I just stick to the side in the middle, away from the locks and sluices although some have sluices under the lock rather than the gates. The keeper will tell you where to go and keep an eye out. The locks have traffic lights on them that indicate when you stop or enter. It's all straight forward enough tbh, nothing to worry about.

This is a trip I've been considering doing myself, but haven't done it yet.

The distance along the river from Upton to the centre of Worcester is 11 miles. The speed limits on the Severn are 6mph Upstream and 8mph Downstream.

There was long lines tied down the lock walls, you loop your line through these as the lock level drops or raises your line moves up then long lines.

I have been down to Worcester from Stourport on Severn on a narrowboat, it was a pleasant enough trip, the lock keeper at Holt Fleet let us tie up on the lock pontoon and go for a walk. Not many campsites on the trip from memory.

The Avon from Stratford to Tewkesbury is probably a more picturesque trip , the Avon isn't as busy and has more accessible banks. I did it 30 years ago and set up our tent on the banks at dusk.

I've been through a lock (on the Trent) a grand total of once . It was manned, and I'd bought a long painter beforehand because I knew it was a deep lock. I threw the line up to the volunteer who tied it off but controlled it as the lock drained (I have a metal clip on the end of the line which I think I should take off in case I brain the person I throw it to). We used our oars to fend off from the green lock walls when we drifted onto them. Easy peasy.

This weekend I may well end up having to do one myself. I have windlass, small lock key (I think for powered ones? unsure) and anti-vandal key, though I'm not sure any of my local locks have those on, I'm carrying it just in case.

I've a m8 Chippenham way who I talk about going on the Severn or Avon with one of these days, so by all means let us know how you get on .
