Would I need to prove it?
Now, as it happens, I asked that question of a nice dealer man today

The jist was (and we weren't too serious) that you can do this without too much trouble for racing, but you'll have to sign a guarantee never to sell the engine and you'll have NO warranty. He also reckoned delivery would be slow and the engine might well cost more than the 4 stroke, new. So very unattractive.

He also said he gets the odd secondhand one in

Outboards

If you type in "mariner 6hp vs mercury 9.9hp" on youtube there's a race between similar boats with these two engines.
The 9.9hp overtakes the 6hp of course, but it's not that much faster to be honest, although the boats only have one person on board.

Fair play to Mervyn. In honesty, I'm looking for a somewhat more bouyant rig :-P

Decision made

I've ordered a Quicksilver 270 Airdeck from Ron Hale Marine so fingers crossed. They seemed like a nice bunch of blokes on the phone, good price too...

Engine next.

I should have said that during the conversation, Ross Hale mentioned that they'd never had a warranty return on ANY Quicksilver SIBS, unlike some other brands that they have stocked.

However, they must have quite genteel clientele (not RIBnetters ) 'cos he was well shocked at the idea of planking a 9.8hp on her.

"ooooooh, far too powerful, much too fast!"

I can't wait

(btw, thanks Billy )

something else to consider ,or within reason ,just because you have a smaller boat doesent always mean that you will get up on the plane better for a given hp ,compare say an 8hp with 2 adults on board and a slightly larger boat ,though perhaps a bit heavier owing to been longer and perhaps that bit wider the larger boat sometimes will plane quicker and be that bit faster owing to having a larger planing area .

Point taken, but in truth I'm not looking for speed, just the ability to plane with two on board. A larger SIB is not an option for me. I'll keep yis posted on the rest of the package as it comes together.

Have bought SIBS from them before & they are a good bunch. Just round the corner from family for me !

My replacement ended up being a 260sd excel . First try tomorrow !

That's good to know - bit nervous here waiting for the Postman

They were £250 below RRP and £150 less than the local bloke would cut an Autumn "cash" deal for, so I was beginning to wonder had my greed got the better of me. Shipping was a miserly £26, the standard mainland rate.

I like these lads a lot

Best of Luck with the Excel, BTW

Touchdown! - the crowd goes wild

The SIB has arrived and is on inflation test in the shed. It seems to be the mutts. Apart from a generally sturdy build, I like that the various inflation pressures are CLEARLY marked at each valve and the supplied foot pump has a pressure gauge. There is a repair kit with a great number of patches and adhesive that I hope not to require

I see a lot of complaints on here that SIBs never go back in the bag after you use them once. QS seem to have got around this with an open form bag - basically a large cross shaped piece of tarp with the handles and clips on one side - you just fold it up around the SIB, clip it together and tighten the straps, simples

Thanks all for the advice.

Is that what it's for? I thought we had an odd shaped, funky QS logo'd beach blanket with added straps.

Dinghies not been deflated in 8yrs.

I'd been on the look for an Avon beach rug to match.

Sea Trials

Date and Time: Saturday 30 October, Fahan Marina HW 1145
WX: Moderate Breeze from the SSE, shelter from hills giving F2 wave effect
Present: Self and two brave RNLI lifeboat crew. Malin Head CG alerted and standing by.
Equipment: Quicksilver 270AD paired with the 2006 Toohotsue 9.8 - 2 stroke, fresh from the Land of Song.
Loading: Self (L), donegaldan (XL) bag of ground tackle (XXL) and fuel.

After some preliminary turns and checks, we distributed the weight (donegaldan leaned forward) and we let the nags out...

What can I say - more fun than a barrel of monkeys and both the motor and SIB performed better than even I had hoped.

GPS logged runs up and down wind gave 14.6Kts (16.8mph to you sibbers ) and the boat was very well behaved in the slight waves present.

donegaldan was then beached and I had a go solo. Dunno how fast it went (faster!!!) 'cos I daren't let go of the tiller or the SIB - Holy Jaysus!

Presumably in revenge for the beaching, donegaldan later tried to test my LJ by telling me that the water was shallow and to hop out - see pic.

So in conclusion - I would really never have bought this combo of my own volition, so thanks RIBnet for more sound advice!

I (15st+) was clocked at over 12knts by the Helford River Patrol bod in our QS 2.3/5hp Tohatsu. Goodness knows what the kids are getting out of it. Mader than a box of frogs.

Basic problem with 2-stroke is to keep the emissions down you need a) a very good port / chamber / piston head design and b) a humungous amount of sensing & control gear, and by the looks of things direct injection is a must, which in turn needs air blowers etc etc.

Now, that;s fine on an engine you can sell for £12K+, coz you'll get your design & tooling money back, but now try & design & tool for one that you can sell for maybe £400 against the 4- stroke. Then try & fit all that technology into a box as small as a 2Hp. (ever noticed how many of the wee engines are resprays of each other? - nobody wants to spend money developing their own!)

The thing I find most ironic is it's emission control for leisure use but not for Industrial use. So the people who use their outboard every third weekend (if the sun is out) must comply with the emissions rules, but the bods out there 24/7/365 can run old school emissions machines.

Nice set-up willk, bet 15+ knots in a 2,70 m must feel like F1 on water
Not only the tiller, remember to hold on to the boat also......
