Have fun and just make sure you're not in the Sound when the tide's flooding. The fact that the Scottish government approved the construction of the largest tidal array in the world to be constructed in the sound tells you all you need to know bout the strength of the flow!

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately we didn't get much time to explore the island on the boat as the surfing was so good , we camped next to the beach in macir bay and surfed there , I did take the boat out once there and fought my way out through the surf but with waves of up to 6 foot it was way out of my comfort zone. I would love to go back sometime and explore a bit more especially the large sheltered bay around port Charlotte and bowmore . With friendly locals and plenty to see it would make for a great sibbing holiday.
