SIBs on Coniston
Might take the new motor up there to do the slow parts of running in on Saturday. Quick google reveals a place for a launch that'll charge a fiver. It'll be brass monkeys despite temperature coming up on Saturday.
I did Ullswater last summer. Not been Coniston. Anyone got any thoughts?
Cheers.

Just the 10mph speed limit to consider. Not sure how well it's policed but it's an annoying speed for a SIB only just on the plane. I can'y quite remember from when I had the Mariner brother of this motor, are you allowed 3/4 throttle after one or two hours?

1. For the first hour of operation, run the engine at varied throttle settings up
to 2000 RPM or at approximately half throttle.
2. For the second hour of operation, run the engine at varied throttle settings
up to 3000 RPM or at three‑quarter throttle, and at full throttle for
approximately one minute every ten minutes.
3. For the next eight hours of operation, avoid continuous operation at full
throttle for more than five minutes at a time.
I'm thinking I can do the first couple hours on the lake. Slightly cheeky on the speed limit, but maybe quiet enough at this time of year in the middle of the lake so not to bother anyone or wreck the bank with wash.

Hi Croolis, Coniston is a lovely stretch of water albeit a little on the small side. However as Fenlander says it does have a speed limit of 10mph or 10 knots depending upon which Lake District authority literature you are reading. I very much doubt it will have a ranger patrolling at this time of year, even at the weekend. It is £5 to launch and you'll also have to pay for parking.
Saturdays forecast is cloudy/dry but with wind gusts WSW upto 31 mph, unfortunately that's exactly the direction you don't want the wind to be from if you're on Coniston.
Personally I much prefer Ulleswater, launching from Glenridding is free, much larger stretch of water and it's more sheltered than Coniston if the wind is blowing from WSW.

That's great info, thank you.
I remember us talking about Glenridding last summer. I also saw a place at a campsite on the northeast bank at the top end, think it was Cross Dormant.
Was looking at Coniston for variety, but Ullswater just as useful. I'm using Windfinder - Ullswater is slightly lighter gusts but much the same. This is where real world knowledge is useful: because I sail my sailing dinghies on a reservoir surrounded by trees and have only taken my SIB on the Trent, I'm not sure what 10mph/30mph gusts looks like on something like Ullswater. Is that enough for a bit of whitecaps?

Yes it can be, however you have much more shelter on Ullswater especially if you hug the southern shore of the lake in a WSW wind. You can always find some shelter on Ullswater.
Coniston lies in a NE - SW position, with the SW end being very exposed to the Irish Sea and any SW/WSW winds are funneled down the full length of the lake.

Hi Croolis, just got a weather update for Coniston & Ullswater for Sat. My advice would be don't bother going to either tomorrow, gusts up to 35mph. It wouldn't be pleasant.

Thank you chap. Sadly, some ugly stuff has raised its head in my life and I'm unlikely to be going anywhere for a while. Might manage the Trent, lol.
Picked up the motor though.

My recollection is the NE end of Coniston to the North of the boating centre can be rather weedy...

Only weather forecasters and football managers can get it so wrong and still get paid!
