Hmmm, not sure how much RNLI DNA is in that but a bit of fun. I would not be wanting to pay more than £300 TBH. Many a minter of a classic Avon Hypalon SIB goes for less...

So saw this Yamaha 2007 2 smoke on eBay.
The owner states "2007 Yamaha Outboard, originally rated at 9.9hp, but upgraded (May 2018) to 15hp (through replacing the reed valve)."
He has slapped some 15hp decals on it and is asking £1500. I was under the impression a conversion was a bit more involved and you need to cross reference Various part numbers for exhaust, carb ect.
So do you think that is a 15hp engine? Would be a shame if someone got caught out.....

No good if you don't say why, what is the Yamaha 9.9 to 15 conversion?

Sorry fenlander, what do you mean if you don't say why?
I wasn't going to look, just more interested if people thought it was 15hp or 10hp.

Because if there is a legit conversion of the Yamaha model 9.9 to 15 and it had been done properly and proved to your satisfaction you could consider such a motor.... but obviously not at that money.
So I was asking Lee as an outboard engineer of 18yrs experience what parts were needed to convert a 9.9 Yamaha to 15 assuming it was even possible.

Yes it did seam rather overpriced for a 11 year old motor! Although I know people buy such motors for silly money at this time of year.
I didn't realise Lee was well versed in such matters, I would also like to hear if there is a way of doing the conversion. Although if it were my money I was parting with I would want an engine with the correct original parts, if you want a 15hp engine... buy an original 15hp motor.

Yes actually it's a bit of a soap box thing of mine. There will be some on here and other places who really know for some OB types what is needed for a conversion. But also across boating forums and on here there are those that don't really know but post with conviction giving duff info.
So the only way to be 100% sure is to buy the correct OB and get the HP as stated on the data sticker.

I will wait it out for a nice 15hp engine. My saving grace is I am in no rush.
Part of me is very tempted to get a Suzuki 20hp efi at 44kg. I think the technology is fantastic but I am slightly put off by the complexity, I like to service my own engines and I'm not sure if it's a bit beyond me, not sure if I would void any warranty too. Anyway before I go off on a tangent thanks for your views.

MCL have you read the thread on servicing my Suzuki 20efi? If not have a look through and see in you are comfortable with the work needed. Also see the linked thread about diagnostics on post #43.
http://www.rib.net/forum/f36/suzuki-...ice-75209.html
What I did was to have the dealer do the initial first service which took my warranty through year one. Then I decided junking the following 4yrs warranty for the large cost saving (min saving £450) and hassle of getting to the dealer (8hrs travel over the warranty period) was a judgement I was willing to take. In my opinion the first year's bedding down is the most likely time to throw up an unexpected issue and after that if used with respect and properly serviced then OBs are mostly very reliable.

I have just read it fenlander, I will post on that thread with more specific questions though.
Going back to the outboard listed above, i have the yamaha 9.9 / 15 hp service manual. The only difference in the specifications is the read valve. The carb and jets are listed as being the same, although I would be interested to compare the 15 and 9.9 carb to see if the opening to the carbs were the same. Not sure about the exhaust plate I will try and have a look at a parts diagram at somepoint out of interest.

Zodiac Futura anyone?
This Zodiac Futura S looks a bargain and it doesn’t sound like the pictures do it justice https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F202324485330

The glue to fix the rub hole caused by the tyre is included in the price and you can use that surely?

Hmm... so a full transom rebuild needed... plus will either need (or if not still advised) to re-glue the complete floor... and I think some of the speed tube construction is glued so that again could need or should be done as well.
Then there's the tyre rip in the tube... probably needs an inside and outside patch.
That lot is a huge task and given the ability plus likely use of the Futura I'd only trust a full rebuild from one of the decent RIB shops. That's really going to cost.
Getting it home will be a faff as you'll need to dismantle the boat to carry with the engine in a large estate car or van while towing the trailer.
I'm guessing it won't be practical to see the OB running and it appears prior to listing on Ebay this too was left abandoned in the garden like the rest.
If this were all so easy to repair in a weekend as stated and given seller already has the glue... and knows it is a super reliable engine... then they'd spend a weekend repairing to get the engine back on and sell in full usable order to get its full value.
But he's not doing it as he knows it's a massive amount of work.

hymerbeliever - I'm going to bump up your own ad as it's a real bargain:
http://www.rib.net/forum/f21/yam-360...tml#post773319
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yam-360s-...oAAOSwHqpbFDFf
I had one of these big Yam's once and they are very roomy, solid, 'big' feeling boats. Ideally on a trailer but superb SIBs. Engine is usually £1100 or so and boat £500/600 making your outfit a true bargain.
