Can't help with the engine but Steep Holme is somewhere I'd like to take our arrived out to, are you permitted to land there? I gather it's a nature reserve

No sadly your not allowed to go on there they do trips on there in the summer you can only go round it off now to take engine to mechanics to see what's wrong with it

I had problems which gave those symptoms. It was, for want of a better description, the propellor skidding in the water. It only happened at high speed and in a bit of a chop. I changed the tilt f the engine and it was fine.

Sounds like it may just be the rubber drive in the prop hopefully
just change the prop

Steep holme & engine trouble

I'm with Mikefule here.
Hopefully nothing wrong with motor at all.
Sounds like it could just be prop ventilating and losing grip on water. If motor trimmed out too far, or mounted too high on transom, prop can momentarily break surface and pull air down causing loss of grip, an increase in revs and no drive. Will occur more in high speed tight turns or choppy water.
Usually trimming down a notch should improve things.
Could have been a spun prop I suppose, but unless you hit anything the same symptoms would have occurred on your outward leg.

Mechanic going to test it was fine on way out it's was doing at low speed in the end Gaz the mechanic did say it could be a rubber something todo with the prop was just good to get back near land as Weston has one of the fastest tides would of been a hard row [emoji23]

Sounds like a spun prop to me- essentially there is a rubber bush between the prop and drive shaft and they can come unstuck.

If it was also doing it at low speeds then my earlier suggestion is wrong. However, it remains unlikely to be a fundamental problem with the engine. Hopefully easily sorted.

There was loads of seaweed out there could this cause a spun prop

Unlikely. And if it had, you would have found it tangled around the bottom of the engine and the prop.

Had exactly this in a Honda BF50 where the rubber bush as Poly mentions, had failed. Solution was a new prop.

I had the same thing happen on an Avon with Mercury 15hp after buying a new prop, found it was the inflatable keel had a leak and had gone flat, this was making the prop cavitate. Patched the keel, pumped up hard, and never had the problem again.

Me and my lad would love to have a trip over to Steep Holm. Where in Weston did you launch from, the town slip or off the beach, if you don't mind me asking?

As landlocked Brummies Weston is on our doorstep so to speak!!

I've got a T40 Honwave but currently I'm motorless. I had at 20 Mariner 4stroke but sold it because I want a 30hp 2 stroke as it'll be lighter and more powerful.

How long does it take to get out to Steep Holme, about an hour?

Been to Weston many times over the years but can't recall ever seeing the tide in far enough to reach the harbour. I was actually thinking of a beach launch but I dare say mud is the prohibitive factor with that.
