T40 and choice of outboards

Hi,

Ive been a lurker for some time on rib.net, and i finally received my Honwave T40AE.

In my naive beliefs, I thought that it will be no problem for setting it up every time, even though I've read here several times
that it should be trailered.

After received it, I will now buy a trailer But hey lessoned learned: Need to take advice from the guys at rib.net

Unfortunately this means my budget will be restricted when buying an outboard.

I will only be one person in it, with fishing gear. My weight is approx 75 kg (185 pounds), I don't really care if its fast,
but it should be able to plane and get me from A to B safe. And get me home if stranded in rough weather.

I found the following choices for outboards (I live in Denmark):
10 hp 2 stroke used from 2000 - 1000 gbp
20 hp 2 stroke used from 1987 - 1200 dealer says it has only run 'a few hours'
A new 10hp either tohatsu or mercury.
15 hidea (new, but I'm not sure i would depend my own safety on this, but I could be wrong?)

Which outboard would you choose?

I'm a little worried that 10 hp is not enough, to get me back safe if it gets rough?
Would you guys think a 10 hp should be enough?

I'm hesitant to buy a new 10hp if I need to sell it again after a year, if its too little hp.

Also: What about age of the outboards? Would you guys feel confident in an outboard that is 19 - 28 years?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

If you can get one, A 15hp 2-stroke is definately a good middle ground dude, extremely portable with plenty of grunt too. Buy a 10 and you’ll be wanting more power within weeks trust me, especially with the honwaves flat deep V Hull on a 4m sib so U’ll really feel the drag on a 10hp and probably won’t get on the plane. It all comes down to your budget and usage of your vessel, so better to get it right 1st time!!!

The T40 is a broad heavy SIB. I'd rule out a 10hp... and also the Hidea for possible quality/reliability/dealer/spares problems.

The 20hp is probably the ideal power for that SIB of the ones you've mentioned but 1987 is too old for £1200.

I'd go with Maverick's choice which in the UK you'd find at £1200 or less... a late 90s or early 2000s 15hp 2-stroke in mint condition.

If keeping and launching on a trailer also consider a 15 or 20 4-stroke made in the last 10yrs or so.

20 - 25 HP is unfortunately is too high of a price range for my budget even if used (At least what I have seen so far), so I'll will try to look for an used 15hp in the range of late 90 - 2000.

Thank you very much for your help!
