We were fortunate enough to see The PS Waverley when we went across the Solent from Lymington to The Needles.

It was a great trip, which I would recommend to anyone with a Sib or Rib

It was a great trip Dennis.

I paid £8.40 to hand launch and £8 for parking.

That is very good. We often launch at Hamble Le Rice which is in effect free and about £5 for the ca park but it feels a long way from there to the Needles. I think Lymington is a lot closer and would please her indoors more if we were to make that crossing

Lymington is much closer and she'd probably feel more comfortable doing the shorter open water crossing from Hurst Castle to the IOW. If you went in one of your ribs Lymington would be a good choice, another would be Mudeford although its slightly longer and if in a Rib I think you've only got a couple of hours either side of high tide. No problem in a Sib though.

Nice to see the Waverly again on video, and that was a good shot through the rocks. A trip on her is on our ever expanding to do list.

I always think if you can make it to any island off the mainland, it adds that extra bit of excitement and enjoyment.

Hi Brin, just wish I would have had a decent camera with me instead of my mobile. That's the 4th time I've seen her now, Isle of Skye, Largs x 2 and now The Isle of White. I was surprised to see her. I was also surprised at how fast she is.

Yes and that's why the Scottish West coast is unique... so many to choose from large and small.

I've commented before I hate the faff of going in the dry bag to hunt for the normal camera so often just use my phone which is more handy and waterproof. For land based stuff like holidays and other activities I have a decent travel zoom but for the times when our boating is somewhere interesting or new I bought a second used smaller/older travel zoom from Ebay.

At a purchase price of £50 whilst I'd prefer not to drop it in the sea or have it fail due to water ingress it's not quite like losing a £300-£500 main camera.

It has a 10x zoom and very effective image stabilisation so something similar would have suited your recent trip well. Just a thought.

I've had some lovely trips on the West Coast, always remember my baptism of fire going around Arran & Bute, what a trip that was!

Plans are afoot for a trip to the West Coast next year.

I'm sure I've got an old Panasonic camera in the back of a drawer somewhere. You've prompted me to dig it out.

Along with the Panasonic Lumix I've also found a Cannon Ixus 285HS at the back of a cupboard, but no charger. Just looked on eBay for a charger and used cameras came up as well. The latest bid is £192 just for the camera! Think I'll be having a change of plan.

Just get a DJI Osmo Action 3, 4 or 5. Fully waterproof and both an action video can and a still camera with Horizon balancing. No need to faff with a dry bag at all. I make all my videos using these cameras. This is not the DJI Osmo Pocket. It is the DJI Osmo Action series. Years ago I went through the same camera Journey you are going along spent over £3000 and now I feel have an almost perfect set up.

As I've said before, I'm not on a camera journey. I am more than happy using my mobile to record videos. It was just this one specific shot that a decent zoom camera would have been nice to have.
However, I have looked at the specs of the DJI Osmo Action 5 and I couldn't see that it has zoom lens, what zoom does it have Dennis?

No it does not have a zoom lens. You can set it to 4K and use digital zoom which is ok for up to about 3x Zoom.

The beauty of an action cam in a boat is the Stabilisation, Data storage, Its robustness and it is waterproof. I even use mine under water without a case..... See below

I feel the only thing you sacrifice is the Optical Zoom but I am ok with that.

Think I prefer Fenlanders idea of carrying a small compact zoom camera for the situations such as that of The Waverley.
