It takes a long time for the RNLI to test, trial and put into service a new hull, theres also nothing wrong with the Arancia at all, that design has been evolving for decades. I’d also hazard a guess a PVC boat would stand the test of time sat in the sun 8 hours a day 6 months of the year.

We can keep adding scenario's that favour different boats. It's good that there are many different types (and size) of Soft IB's but I'm not sure it is possible to identify one as king.

Arancias can’t operate at night in this country, some NZ and Aus clubs have night gear though.
As said I’m not comparing the boats! People are get a bit hung up on that aspect, Just introducing the IRB to some people who may not know much about them.

Gemini make similar 'cat hulled' surf rescue boats in South Africa. Runswick Rescue operate one ( Runswick Rescue | Independent Lifeboat – Saving Lives Since 1982) but that is the only inshore rescue cat hulled SIB that I am aware of in the U.K. Does anyone know why they are not more popular here? The RNLI seem to prefer traditional inflatables with a single keel. The Arancia is the same.

30 mph winds that day and we went in some 2 m seas he had no problems

That’s a very cute amount of surf
Those heavy old things wouldn’t see which way an Arancia went in surf.

But then a bigger and heavier boat has less chance of being capsized in heavy weather... strong winds etc. And more load capacity. There is no king of SIBs, it is just about having the right boat for the task. E.g. Surf rescue, SAR, military, exploring etc.

Alright steady on, was just a bit of tongue in cheek.
Forgot to add the outboards have a few modifications too;
Starter handle spacer
Strengthened shaft (not 100% how they do this)
Start in gear disabled
Stainless propel, anti cavitation prop guard
Stainless cupped prop
Used to have upside down mercury kill switches to avoid flicking them off in surf, use normal button type switches now
Throttle return spring
Brand new one have cheap plastic cowlings that kept jumping off in surf so have been modified with stainless to stop flex

Yeah true but the IRC is a better allrounder as it can do everything the Arancia can do whilst carrying more than just a handbag and its quite a lot better for everything else outside of surf rescue.
P.S. I love a good slagging so crack on !

I’d argue a Arancia is rated to 6 people so by no means “a handbag” I’d also bet longevity and build quality would exceed even those zodiacs.
But again, as said a few times no comparisons are intended every boat has its job, just showing some people a SIB they may not have otherwise seen and some interesting facts about them.
