Posted by someone called Fenlander in 2012:-
"Often there is far more to make these "easy" hp upgrades to the next model than folks think.
On the 9.8 Tohatsu vs the 8 the following part numbers are different...
Crankcase
Cylinder head
Head gasket
Exhaust
Exhaust gasket
Carb body (this could be as a body is supplied with the different jets already in though)
Carb jets
Coil plate stop
I know the revs need to be set up by 500rpm and I'd be amazed if there wasn't a different timing setting. There are also some differences to the engine breather hoses and orifices."

Ahh I must have been more thorough back in the day with less gin influence and less crap stuff going on... I'll double check.
So... Yep it appears my 2012 self was more reliable than the 2022 version.
So scrub my stuff in post #38... buy an 8 and keep it to an 8 unless it's thought the carb and coil stopper might get you halfway to a 9.8... not really worth the hassle though.

Unfortunately now too late, already sold for asking price I’m afraid.
Hope you find a suitable motor soon.

Oh well... good job anyway Chipko... I thought there had to be someone for that motor.
And Steve... keep fact checking me. Hate to mislead... sloppy work must cease.

It wasn't so much fact checking David, your suggestion that it could be done got me scrabbling to find information. That 8hp Tohatsu down the road from me was tempting.

That said, I paid 400 quid for it at the height of the price boom so I'm not complaining!

Sometimes it makes more sense to buy a complete parts motor.
Have you upgraded to the round exhaust tube, and added the reed valve spacers ?

I've got my eye on one currently (a 15hp spares motor that is}
Not sure which exhaust mine has, I didn't check when I had the bottom leg off.
As I understand it, just changing the carb is all that's necessary, with the exhaust being a nice to have.
Anyway, if I manage to get my hands on the spares motor it'll be moot because its already a 15hp.

From 74 - 78 only difference was the carb.
After 78 they introduced CDI and stopped using points and condensers.
In 79 they added a shim to the reed valves allowing them open further.
In 81 the 15hp got a bigger round exhaust.
In 90 the 9.9hp got a the same exhaust.
In 93 they redesigned everything until they stopped production in 02 but kept selling them until 07.
Depending on when your outboard was manufactured , it may or may not already have these upgrades . Then all you really need is a carb.

Time for an outboard (Costco sib?)
Flagged up by Fenlander many posts back, reckon this very smart Yam 15 two-stroke will go ballistic in the closing minutes. Fastest finger first, if you’ve deep pockets, will bag this baby.

Should be a good indicator of how silly prices are at the mo!

Yes at today's values the price this very moment of £1331 is a bargain.

15 bidders, I reckon it'll go for close to £1600.

Hmm £1500 not quite as maxed out as it could have been for such a clean one.

It did look clean. There is a simularly clean 9.9 on Facebook marketplace for 1200, which I am surprised no one has snapped up. Its the same engine.

The 8hp Tohatsu listed on ebay at £999 didn't have any bids, now relisted at £899
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/304452926...mis&media=COPY
£1500 for the Yam 15hp 2s and this very clean looking 8hp Tohatsu not having any interest, does this single some normality creeping back into the used market.
