Transom storage small kit bag solution.

Was going through some pouches and cases and found this that I forgot I had, a cycle tool kit and gear storage bag, has its own water cover secured in a zipped rear pocked ideal! Bag is from Halfords, many zipped pockets and compartments ideal for gadgets and couple of flares etc. . .
Tough bag that's made for outdoors so ideal for boat use.
I did come with a quick release mount that I must have left on a bike I sold, the linked caribiners mount works

Zipper look stainless zip lines are plastic so won't rust out, will keep them waxed, bag was designed for outdoor use so should hold up, these bike bags are a good option with good mounting options, better spec than the Halfords own make would be Topeak range of mountain bike frame/seat bags.

The truth often hurts Bigplumbs ..however in all due respect to everyone .. PD is absolutely correct. I have first hand experience of Bikehut stuff and IMO it sucks.

I bought the panniers and rack bag and within a month or so of use..the cheap zips fasteners corroded ..then when you try to open them ..the pull toggle breaks off the zip. They are cheap alloy and certainly not stainless. Mine have never been near salt water. ..only for use on my push bike.

Anyone considering these for a boat environment..dont waste your money..buy a proper dry bag..they are cheaper too...and designed for wet environments.

[emoji106] if you want good cheap drybags, Aldi get them in every now & then & they are very good for the money.

Lomo do them as well and they're not expensive.

Transom storage small kit bag solution.

With the zipper waxed I think it will last at least at least this season, I wanted a transom bag solution and what else is there to use? If this does fail then I will sacrifice one of my maxpedition bags/pouch or order the one below, all the maxpedition pouches I have got have plastic YKK zip and zippers, the key is good coat of wax regularly.

If the OP is planning to keep his flares or other essential safety kit in there I think PD’s comments (which are supported by the Gurnards personal experience, and which my own experience of zips on both bike kit and boats would support) might be rather important. Sod’s law will be the zip toggle snaps off when you try to open it in a hurry because you really need into it.

I will keep a couple of flares in there as general storage but I do carry person flares on my PFD and in my grab box, this transom bag is mainly for putting my phone, spare vhf, fish finder, etc. . . To be used like a boat bum bag, with main kit in the boat rucksack (which is a dry box)

Play nicely, folks. We're all friends here.

I'm a cyclist and motorcyclist. I have various bags and pouches that I have acquired over the years. Bike Hut stuff is "you get what you pay for" quality. However, it is not necessarily bad. I have found that if you pop it through the washing machine periodically, you can remove the accumulated grit and road salt etc. You would need to lubricate the zip.

Realistically, if you use the pouch on a boat in choppy salt water on a regular basis, you might get a season or so out of the bag. Compare that to the cost of a launch, or a full tank of fuel and it's not ridiculous. As a short to medium term solution for occasional use, it's a good idea and thanks for sharing.

Of course, for regular hard use, something actually designed for use on a boat would be better.

For most of us, SIBbing is an occasional hobby. I only launch mine 2 or 3 times a year because I also have a sailing dinghy, a motorbike, bikes, kayaks, etc. to use, and limited time to use them. Anything that makes those few SIB trips a year a bit better, without costing an arm and a leg, is good. Those of you who SIB every weekend will have a different attitude.
