Ullswater speed limit
I have been trying to find the speed limit for Ullswater. It appears to be 10mph unless sign posted.
I usually use my bike GPS to track the speed. But it may not be 100%
My question here is how heavily policed is it if I go slightly over. And can I plane at 10mph? Or is that frowned upon. As I actually want to cover it's distance in good time.
My craft is a 3.3m with a 9.8hp

The speed limit is 10 knots, so just under 12mph on your bike GPS... yes you can plane at 11-12mph.

The speed limit is 10 mph and is enforced by the lake ranger , I have had a telling of by him once for making some sharp turns! But it was just a friendly warning. his boat is berthed at glenridding pier , He is not allways out and I have never seen it out after 5 o'clock. I don't even think they have a speed camera. As long as you're being sensible nobody will bother you at just over plaining speed and I'm fairly sure the steamers cruise at slightly over the speed limit. I would have thought you should be able to see most of the lake in a couple of hours with your set up.

I was camping at park foot. That's a good easy way in my opinion.

If your not camping there's a free slip at how town just beside the road but very limited parking, glenridding steamer car park is good with loads of parking. free to launch but report to steamer ticket office for permission then pay for parking .

Your bike GPS should be more accurate BTW than most other ways of measuring speed on a boat. In sea you need to remember that speed limits are often speed through the water and GPS is speed over ground, so in a 3 knot current your SoW can be 3 knots more than SoG.

If there is a 3 knot current flowing through Ulswater then it will be on the news tonight...

Last time there I was planing at about 13kts in the rib and had no interest from the rangers. The Steamers do up to 16kts, much to the annoyance of the rangers. Some of the sailing club ribs blatantly ignore the speed limit and do whatever they want as the rangers have no legal powers whatsoever. Much above 25kts and the rangers will be left behind anyway.
If you do meet the rangers however, be nice to them. One of them works for me and he's a lovely guy.
Phil

I was up at ullswater the other week and the ranger was out, i exceeded the speed limit somewhat and he never said anything to me.
I think they're pretty relaxed if you don't take the proverbial

ok its been lockdown for us all.......and ullswater on saturday was the busiest ive seen it
the ranger pulled me up saying he clocked me doing 26mph on his hi tech monitoring device (how that works i do not know!!)
he took my name after warning me that he was video ing the conversation and asked about the ownership of the vessel
i was suitably contrite and he just gave me a warning.......i did say i thought i was doing about 15 kts for a small burst to get away from the hordes as my son needed a wee.....
so peeps out there be aware that the ranger is out with the hi tech gear and who knows what would occur if i was arsey to him

We took the Honwave to Ullswater on the recent bank holiday weekend. Parked at Park Foot campsite. Buy a ticket from reception first, £5 all day then head down to the grass car park by the launching beach. Top tip get there early. We arrived around 08:30 and had plenty of space, but when we came to pack up the beach was bedlam. It appears most of the campers are happy to cram into the same tiny beach like sardines, rather than walk a bit to a quieter spot.
Beauiful lake and no need to display registration signs. I knew of the 12mph speed limit, but we saw boats exceeding that all day. Didnt see any rangers ticking them off. We did around 15mph in places but any more is probably pushing it. Watch out for paddleboarders around the shore!
Good luck!

In addition to paddleboarders, Ulleswater has a lot of open water swimming / wild swimming. Most tow a red or orange marker so you can spot them, however there are a few who don't.
Last Friday I past 3 swimmer's in the middle of Ulleswater, no markers and all 3 wearing black caps.
