Weekend at Rhosneigr with new (to me) motor
Hi all.
Had a good weekend in Rhosneigr with the new motor. Was a bit breezy and didn't want to venture too far out as it is an old motor. Was told it had new water pump and when he ran it for me it seemed to pump ok but after a few minutes on the water it was a dribble at idle.
Anyway, I've ordered a full new pump so hopefully that will solve it.
Apart from that, it ran well and is much more punchy than the old chinesium jobby.
Despite being on the lowest setting though, I have to get well forwards to get on plane. Is this normal? If I sit on the rear bench it just sticks its nose in the air and doesn't want to plane. Once on plane I can sit back but then, problem number 2 arrives.
It's very "skiddy" ie, anything more than a very slight course adjustment and it just seems to slide sideways.
Again, is this just a trait of the shallow (almost none existent at the transom) keel.
I'm toying with staying with sibs rather than buying a solid boat but it just doesn't feel confidence inspiring at all.
Would a longer boat be better? Thinking I might go up to a 4m ish one if its going to handle better.
I have a big pickup so space in the truck isn't an issue.
I've been looking at the Zar mini alu range and whilst they ain't cheap, they do look good. The 15 is massive but might be too heavy to manhandle out the back but the 13 looks nice to. They also have "speed tubes" which I guess would help with handling.
All advice greatfully received!
