West Wales & The Gower

Hi all, I'm off to West Wales in between New Quay and Aberaeron for a week then moving onto the Gower for the 2nd week.
Advice re: any registration needed, best places to launch, places to visit, pubs etc, would be most appreciated.
Dont mind if it's a slip or an easily accessible beach launch - 3.6 SIB with transom wheels.

Nicholaston Farm at Oxwich Bay is good. You can launch off the beach at the far end of the bay by the pub. I’ve never launched there, but seen plenty folk do so.

Mumbles is public slip as HDAV says with harbourmaster on duty. Compulsory registration and presentation of insurance - can't remember what the cost is though.

Do you have to register? I thought you could show insurance and just pay to launch? Harbourmaster is new and has “shaken things up”

Unless things have changed since last year, you show up, present your insurance, they do your registration there and then and give you a registration sticker which lasts for the season. There's a fee as I recall but not heavy. Its all fairly painless and done in 15mins. I'm sure there would be more info on the Swansea City Council website - look for Knab Rock slipway. Or there will be a local along in a mo......

Aberaeron has a slip at rear of harbour, you need to show insurance also
there is a firing range which I think you have to inform. Not sure if anyone
bothers to do so .

Thanks guys.
Port Eynon Boat Club is £60 membership for a year but that includes launch fees, car and trailer parking.
Knab Rock is £20 annual registration fee and £5 per launch which incl trailer parking but not car parking.
Aberaeron and New Quay are looking like the obvious places to launch in West Wales, mainly because of ease and parking.
Wouldn't mind peoples opinions on the following places for ease of launching (beach or slip) and car parking :- Tresaith, St Dogmeals, Newport, Aberporth

Didn’t realise you we’re going so far west. We’ve launched the RIBs at Gelliswick bay in the past, decent free launch back in the day, dunno how it is now. Also look at Dale.

Cheers Dave, I'm not going that far south west this time but I am in Sept when I'm going to Freshwater East. Both locations are in the book for that trip.

Ping me a message Steve when you're heading to Fresh East, if you like. I'm 5 mins up the road and can show you a few spots if you like. J.

Is there still a bouncer on the ramp?

Never launched there myself. Although I live 5 mins away I usually launch somewhere on the Milford Haven waterway. I'll do some digging and post on here

Freshwater East update...... Yes there is supposedly a security guard on the slip, primarily to stop jet skis from launching as they've been banned from the beach. Pembrokeshire National Park website says his remit is also to limit numbers of boats on the beach but I've rarely seen it busy enough for that sort of action. That said I walk the dogs down there a few times a week and never seen a bouncer either....

Interested to know why you don't launch at Freshwater East?

Just preference really..... I like to head out to Dale / Warwick / Skomer or to one of the pubs up river. Also I've usually got a few passengers, dogs etc so launching where there's a pontoon suits me better...

Pubs up river, now you're talking my language

Suggestions, names and locations will be well received

Check out the Cleddau Estuary , mid-way between your two destinations . Marinas at Milford Haven and Neyland . Several easy launch sites and riverside pubs . Relatively sheltered but can get busy with large commercial traffic . Great base for sight seeing but check out the local firing ranges before venturing further west
