What have I got
I have just aquired a SIB and a 2.5hp outboard. It's an avon but Im not sure what I have got. Please check the pictures on my photobucket (link below) and tell me what I have got. I think its a redcrest but not sure. It is 10ft long end to end. Do any of you know what it is and what year it is please. Also what year do you think the outboard is as the serial number is missing. Many thanks.

It's the big brother of the Redcrest. It's an Avon Redseal. That was the only one they made with a front seat.
If you want a motor mount the liferaft servicing guy next to Poole bridge sells them for about 50 quid. He's listed on the Avon website as a servicce centre.

redcrest are 9ft 3inches and the redseals are 10ft 3inches and the next size is a redshank at 12 ft 3 ins as nos4r2 just said looks like its the redseal as its the only one with a front seat ,max hp is 4p and can carry 5 persons , if its 10 feet long exactly with a 13 inch tube diameter its late 1960s early 70s the later boats have a 14 inch diameter tube.

Thanks for that, you certainly know your Avons. I dont supose you know what size the floor would be do you? I am making a one pice one out of ply. I have measured the inside but don't really know how tight to the sides the floor should go at the mo I'm going to go for 36" wide. What do you think?
Many thanks

if your making a one piece floor it only goes up to where the bow starts to rise or where your feet will go if seated on the front seat ,you can make another board to go in the bow but it will have to be seperate from the main board to cater for the bow rise , i have made boards and usually leave about 4mm clearence so that they are not too tight or slack and dont forget to round off the edges. if using an engine you will need to brace the board from the stern to about halfway along the boat with a couple of 4 cm square batterns to stop the floor flexing when applying power on the engine ,.also handy for fastening eye bolts or cleats to fasten equipment to ,ie fuel tank . the RNLI still use this boat though its kept deflated called X class boat on some of the tyne class lifeboats .

its not a bad idea to take a large sponge or small scoop bailer with you ,because there is no keel any small amount of water splashed in the boat will pool and soon wet your feet , i used to make a bailer from an old square plastic fabric conditioner container or better still find an old square 5 ltr plastic petrol can and cut that in in half so that the handle can be used ,round buckets are useless as you cannot get the small amounts of water out unless it flexes.

on the subject of DIY bailers
I hav made several from the normal Milk polybootles that Tesco and the like use....get a 4 litre one, leave the cap screwed in and cut up from the bottom to open it out and give it a scoop shape. Should you lose it over the side, you can easily replace it, and then find the original one snagged with a rope round your prop two weeks later because some numpty has tied it to a lobster pot!
