What hp

Looking at honwave around 3.5 or Elling
Airdeck
Looking to use on lakes and also around coast nice and close in.
What sort of engine would be suitable. Honda 8 or 10? Something like that. Would be me and 1 other. Maybe fishing.

Any help appreciated

You definitely need a 15hp 2stroke !

I might have one for sale!

User experience indicates the Elling hull is very easy to drive so you'll get similar performance from a 10hp as a 15hp on a 3.5/3.8m Honwave.

In the end it probably all boils down to weight of outboard and age of skipper unless its on a trailer.

Either an 8 or 9.9 will push it respectably.

The manufacturers will recommend a maximum engine hp and weight.

If you think you'll be skimming about at high speed on flat water, especially if you'll be carrying crew or passengers, buy the biggest engine you can afford, subject to the manufacturer's limits.

If you think you will be using the boat solo, taking it steady in choppy seas and strong winds, and launching across beaches or dragging it by hand up slipways, go for the smallest engine you can get away with.

I'm a 57 year old , 12 stone, 5'7" clerical worker in reasonable health and I can carry a 9.9 4 stroke for a reasonable distance, and launch and recover solo with the engine fitted.

I have a Yam 310 and 2 stroke Yam 8hp.

It's spot on 2 up with gear/fishing gear on rivers or lakes. It would also happily cope with inshore stuff in reasonably Clement weather.

The extra performance of a bigger engine probably would require a non air floor as even with the Yam 8hp (which is a cracking engine) the hull can slide around a little. That's with the floor inflated to the exact pressure.

I do fancy a bigger engine, but I will be buying a bigger boat with ally floor first! One day!

RIBase
I have a Elling KB 350 air deck with a 9.8 hp 4 stroke on the back and very pleased with how it handles and how stable it is, makes a good fishing platform.
It gets on the plane and settles down very quickly reaching 20mph with 2 up I have got around 18mph.
Hope this help

Ok well remember on all feedback we have and as I mentioned above the OB size can be different for the Elling compared to Honwave.
